Why You Too Need A Social Media Detox

Social media detoxes: everybody's doing them, so much so that it may as well be the new avocado breakfast shot for Instagram- but are they really all they're hyped up to be? Had you have read the title (which, let's not be patronizing here, you probably have), you'll know that the short answer for that is yes and in today's post, I'll be telling you exactly why- as well as why you too need one if you haven't already tried it! Have I intrigued you yet? If so, it's time to scroll down!

It goes without saying that we live in a technology crazed society, one where everybody and their mother seems to be obsessed with the Snapchat dog filter and Instagramming their every move (myself included), and we can often undermine the time we spend on it. Take my iPhone battery usage statistics: Youtube: 5 hours on screen, Snapchat: 1.2 hours on screen, Instagram: 38 minutes on screen- to name a few. If that wasn't a shock enough, that didn't even take in the time I spent on social media on my computer or tablet! So, I made it my resolution during exam season to get rid of the darn thing (not literally, of course!) and even afterwards, it's a resolution that stuck.

I can honestly say that my social media detox, as you may, opened my eyes- taking me back to the days when everybody seemed to live just fine without it! I realised what the burden social media held within my life, despite its many bonuses: I didn't have time for anything, I merely spent time with my family, I wasn't as productive and I wasn't as happy. During my social media detox, it was as if I was living a new life: I was happy, I was getting an extortionate amount of work done a day, I felt refreshed, I felt more confident (oddly) and I felt more motivated. Not only that, but my phone manages to last a record-breaking (for me, anyway) two to three days when charged- which I think my parent's electricity bill will thank me for, as opposed to the two to three charges a day!

Now, don't get me wrong I'm not saying you need to go on a social media deleting spree- I still use it, but my statistics as of today are... Snapchat: 24 minutes on screen, Instagram: 18 minutes on screen, Twitter: 11 minutes on screen and YouTube (oddly, I admit) not even on the list! Okay, less about me, we're here to talk about you- so why do you need a social media detox? As much of a fad and punishment it may seem, it'll allow you to focus your time elsewhere (and not on your phone screen)- see the friends you haven't seen in months, read the book you never had time to read, blog more often, get out and see more to name a few! If you stick to it, your productivity will soar and trust me... that feels incredible at the end of the day- at least, to a workaholic like me! Finally, what have you got to lose? It's not as if you're waving goodbye forever, so even if you didn't enjoy the time, you'll not have missed much!

So, I challenge you- take 24 hours or more away and tell me how you found it. Trust me, make yourself busy and it won't be anywhere near as difficult as it seems!
