How to Prepare Yourself for College Life After School

As the high school term comes to an end, we can’t wait to go to the College. The thought of meeting new people, making new friends, and reading new subjects, etc start giving us goose bumps.  However, as the time gets closer, many doubts and confusions start arising. ‘What kind of people will I be paired with?’, ‘Will I be able to keep up?’, and ‘How would the professors be?’ There’s no end to those questions which are, quite frankly, meaningless but at the same time normal for any teenager.

You hear a lot of rumors about College Life being ‘this’ good or ‘that’ bad and you just can’t help thinking about it all the time. So, here are a few tips that would help you start off your college life just the perfect way.

Develop good social skills

Learn to talk to people, be open and be polite. College is only half about your studies, the other half is your friends. Depending on how you interact and project yourself you could make some great friends here.

Ragging

It’s not something to be scared of. Sometimes it could help you get to know your seniors better. So, as long as it doesn’t offend you or make you uncomfortable, just be friendly and move on. If you don’t like something, let them know. If they are being offensive or rude just complain to the management. Ragging offences are taken very seriously.

Interaction with professors:

They are the ones who could make you into what you could be. Do not be scared to ask any doubt you might have, however silly it might seem. If you’re genuinely interested in a subject and wish to learn more go and talk to the related professor after a class.

Home Sickness

If this is the first time you’re staying away from your parents, it’s only normal to feel homesick. Most colleges have special homesick holidays for freshmen. Even if yours doesn’t, ask your parents to visit once or twice a month. Once you make good friends you’ll get used to it and this would no longer be a problem.

Work every day:

It could be tempting to slack off once you are a few days into the college but remember that doing some work every day can make things a lot easier in the long run.

Get comfortable with technology

In college you will be making use of computers and a lot of other equipment. Most of your work will be done outside of a notebook so it is essential that you familiarize yourself with tech.

Balance your life

As mentioned before both studies and friends share most of your life in college. That means you can’t ignore either. Make an acceptable balance. Know when the time to study is and when to party.

Get a part-time job

Seriously, do it. This would help you in so many ways. College is not cheap, there will be a lot of expenses. Even if your parents can provide for you, managing it yourself can be a great lesson as well as experience. It’ll teach you the value of hard earned money which you will appreciate later in life.

Stay away from scuffles

Students killing each other out of anger is not unheard of. If you see a fight, simply walk away. Any involvement is often not worth it. Just focus on what you came for and stay safe.

Making use of extra-curricular activities

Even if you’re not good at anything just go give something a shot. Write essays, volunteer to be in the organizing comities, learn a new sport or skill. What’s important is that you should no longer be afraid to step onto a stage in front of an audience.
