Ah, the tug of war we often play within ourselves, to meet the expectations of those we look up to and admire, particularly when they conflict with who we truly are inside. Rupert is a children’s Story about soul searching, and the journey and lessons within are both an encouragement and opportunity we can all readily discover when reading it.
The story within the story is about exploration and adventure, self discovery and awareness. It’s about refusing to deny one’s true calling, in the name of being “successful” by traditional standards, to the point that Rupert literally turns his back on his family, in search of whatever it takes to fulfill his greatest dreams and desires.
Ultimately, however, Rupert discovers many life lessons throughout his journey, things he might never have learned about any other way. The story comes full circle then, but I’m not about to spoil the ending. Suffice to say, no one has to simply earn a paycheck to get by in today’s world. There are plenty of things we can do to pay the bills, while still pursuing our dreams and being happy with how we manage our finances.
Artwork is an important attribute in books written for young children, as it helps them engage and learn so much more from the story. The illustrations in Rupert are captivating, colorful, detailed and charming. A whole lot of work went into both the story and the artwork presented therein, which truly brings this story to life, making it one children will want to read again and again.
Very young children will benefit, because even without reading the words, one can point out the various activities taking place, the sign of a well designed and produced picture book, in my opinion. I read this book to my 18 month old granddaughter, and when she got a little antsy, I pointed to the pictures and talked my way through it without reading the exact words on the page to her. She babbled back and we both giggled together, having some grand one on one time, as we shared this story.
Rupert is definitely a picture book worth purchasing if you have little ones. It’s a book I hope libraries and elementary schools will carry, because kids can learn a lot from it, all the while enjoying their reading experience as they turn the pages.
