I heard about the Homeschool Awakening from Momentum Influencers, and was interested to learn more. Now, most of you know that my son is now 21 and far beyond the days of homeschool. It was something that I never really even thought about, and watching this movie, wish I would have! I always figured that it was best for an only child to go to school, and make friends. Seeing the small groups that get together for home school days, and enjoy field trips and other things, I feel that those friendships (of many different ages), would have lasted a lot longer than some of the ones he no longer has, after school was complete.

Our son Dylan, didn’t really like school. He was born almost deaf in one ear, and had a lot of challenges with learning and things like that. We ended up taking him out of public school when he was about 10 years old. There was an issue in the class, and the leadership was not very supportive. The local schools in our area, pretty much catered to those that liked to play sports, and Dylan didn’t. We enrolled him at a private Christian school in our area, and at first, it really helped. Less children in classes, teachers that could focus more on the places where each student needed help, and a freedom. That only went through 8th grade, so after that, he was back in public school. He had had enough his junior year and told us that he couldn’t take it anymore. He dropped out, and we encouraged him to take a college course to earn his GED, which he did. Looking at the families in this movie, it really hurts my heart, that I didn’t give him that freedom earlier, and took the time to teach him at home.

Hearing the part in the movie about the “Old Deluder Satan Act” was really interesting. Until this happened, most kids were taught at home. Massachusetts passed the Old Deluder Satan Act in 1647, laying the basis for public schools in America. The Puritans valued literacy highly; they believed all individuals should be able to read and interpret the Bible for themselves. In 1642 Massachusetts had required parents to ensure their children’s ability to read, and five years later, in this act, the state mandated community schooling. The religious origins of laws providing for education in early America may help explain some of the conflicts that have subsequently developed when courts, enforcing the establishment clause of the First Amendment, have invalidated devotional religious exercises in public schools. To find out more, go to this site. Some of that info really explains the changes in the years that followed.

The stories in this documentary, show all types of people. Those that were meant to teach, and those that weren’t. There was always a way to make things happen. Just because you don’t have a degree in education, does not make you a horrible teacher. Being a parent, we want what is best for our kids, and if it’s your decision to home school…then God bless you. I pray that everything will work out for the best, and you’ll find a supportive group to walk together with to help on this journey. If, for some reason, due to employment, etc. where you cannot home school…then God bless you, too! Take some time to do bible studies together, enjoy the outdoors and just let your kids know you’re there for them, and their grades do not define their character.
