Choosing the Right Oil: Maintenance Made Simple

Changing your oil can be simple and fast, as long as you have the right equipment. While most people enjoy changing their oil because it can save money or because it’s relaxing, you still need to understand which oil to use. Choosing the right oil is an essential part of this process.

According to Popular Mechanics, you can choose between Conventional or synthetic oils, Viscosity (thickness), and certified API brands among other things. Oils with a starburst symbol that are labelled “API Certified” are designated by the American Petroleum Institute as meeting specific requirements. You should always start by choosing a quality API brand.

Make sure you are choosing the right oilViscosity Represents a fluid’s resistance to flow. Generally, you want more-viscous oil for the summer and less-viscous oil for the winter. Oil comes with two numbers (i.e. 10W-30): the first Number Represents thickness at 0-degrees (“W” is for winter), while the second number represents the viscosity at 212-degrees (boiling-point for water). You should consult you manual for proper oil viscosity.

You can also choose between conventional oil, a standard new-car oil, and full-synthetic oil. Full-synthetics are better for complex engines, and undergo strict standards. They generally work better, but are more expensive. Again, consult your manual for more info.
