This caused a fair bit of head scratching…
A filming permit hadn’t been issued, so that appeared to rule out the possibility of the car being involved in a stunt. No accident had been reported, and police and paramedics attending the scene confirmed no-one had been hurt.
All identifying marks had been removed from the hollowed out car making it difficult to trace.
“I just saw some of the pictures myself and I was mystified as to how the car ended up there,” Toronto’s mayor, John Tory, told reporters on Wednesday. “You’re always very puzzled as to how a car would have got into that particular situation.”
The mystery floating car was naturally perfect fuel for social media: “What’s weirder: the fact that there’s a car dangling from a wire below a bridge, or that nobody has the slightest idea why or how the car got there in the first place?” one user tweeted.
Theories were not in short supply. Every possible angle was suggested, from aliens to an end-of-term university prank, similar to the 2001 University of British Columbia students who suspended a red Beetle decked out with the Canadian flag from the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco.
