Many enthusiasts consider the 205GTI to be the best Hot Hatchback of the 1980s. Although the VW Golf GTI is more complete in its overall abilities and had a build quality that very few cars of the time could compete with.
VW were the ones truly Responsible for the GTI craze that began in 1976, even if they weren’t specifically responsible for the concept. The 205 was the car however that took things a step further when it launched in 1984. At first, it only came with a 1.60-litre engine and suffered with extra-stiff suspension and a delicate build quality, but by 1986 it had been facelifted with 115bhp and adjusted suspension. This went some way to creating the perfect car. Later that year, the 205 gained the 130bhp 1905cc XU engine, which gave it much faster acceleration plus a much more potent top speed.
It’s still a bone of contention amongst the fans, which is the better of the pair – the 1.6 edition or the 1.9 edition. The smaller car is lighter and better balanced, but the 1.9 is ultimately faster. Both had a tendency to over steer somewhat, but this has been tamed by modern tyres.
