Brrr. The wind chill is picking up. I can no longer wear a t-shirt. I had to find where I stashed all the gloves and hats. Summer is a distant memory. Fall passed in the blink of an eye. There’s no way to avoid the fact that Winter is coming.

With the onset of winter, comes more indoor time. It’s too cold to play outside. Fall sports are over. Winter sports have begun. Though we all go out to school, work, or errands, we are home in the evenings and on weekends.

As a mom, I have a constant tug-of-war. On the one hand I know the kids want to play inside on their tablets or electronic devices, but on the other hand I don’t want them to always have their noses press up to screens. Finding ways to keep kids occupied and engaged is a balancing act. I want to let them “power down” by playing on devices but I don’t want them to have too much screen time.

Playing Through the Winter Months

We’re a family that has two speeds: GO GO or STOP. There’s no in between with us. We are either running from school to religious education class to soccer practice to swim practice and back again OR we are curled up under a blanket. There’s no in between with the Musings from Me family!

When we are hunkered down for the winter, we rely on VARIETY to keep us occupied. We go from a little outdoor play to reading time to screen time to play time to movie time. We mix it up…change up the order of operations each day. We’re in Maryland so we have at least 5 and often up to 10 snow days each winter. I keep a stash of crafts and stack of movies to stave off the cries of “I’m bored.”

One of the ways I mix up play time during winter months is by rotating the Toys. I’ll put out a stack of board games one week. The next week I’ll bring out the trains and race car sets. The next week, it is all about science experiments. My play room may be a mess by the end of the winter but at least we have fun!
