What to Expect During a SASSA Grant Review

As per the rule, Sassa conducts regular reviews to check the eligibility criteria in 90 days. Their officials evaluate the whole process to check whether the beneficiaries are eligible for the Grant. SASSA will have the right to select, reject, or restore your grant during the review process. I will explain the review process and its requirements in this article.

You should have to provide the following documents to SASSA for grant review

  • You should provide your South African Identity card.
  • If you are married you and your spouse’s 3-month bank statement is required.

  • If you receive a Child Support Grant, you should provide your child’s birth certificate.
  • For Disability Grant and Care Dependency Grant, you have to submit your medical certificate.
  • If you receive your payment through the bank you should provide your life certificate in the SASSA record.

What are the steps for the SASSA Grant Review

The SASSA Grant has a 90-day review process. You should follow these steps to review the notification of Grant Review Process:

  • Go to the post office 
  • Possible decision after reviewing the grant
  • Restore or reject 
  • Reconciliation of grant 
  • Notification of Grant Review Process

Before 3 months the SASSA will inform you through a notification for a grant review process. In this written notification the SASSA will guide you about all documentation which are necessary for the grant review and guide you for the review process.

Go to the Post Office

You must have to visit the selected post office with all your required documents within a month of receiving notification.

Possible Decision after Review the Grant

After reviewing your financial status, the SASSA will possibly have these decisions.

  • Restoration 
  • Rejection 
  • Restore Grant After Review
  • If you meet the criteria after reviewing the process the SASSA will continue your grant and you will receive your payment on date.

Reject Grant After Review 

If you don’t meet the eligibility criteria after the review process, the SASSA has the right to cancel/reject your grant. You have the right to appeal against the rejection within the 3-month review decision.

Reconciliation of Grant 

In the review process, if the SASSA observes that you received more grants than you deserve. The SASSA will reduce the amount of grants.

The following are the reasons for grant rejection:

  • If you do not meet the income criteria your grant is rejected.
  • If you provide the wrong details.
  • If you provide incorrect bank details or you not update your bank details.
  • You may receive other social grants from the government of South Africa.
  • If your age is above or less according to the SASSA mentioned age limit. The eligible age limit is 18 to 60 years.
  • If you are not a South African citizen, you have no right to receive any social grant from the government.

Documents Required for Appeal

If you face rejection in any grant and you want to appeal against the rejection, you need the following documents for appeal:

  • Your current bank statement.
  • Proof of your unemployment from your previous employer.
  • The sworn statement proves your current financial position.
  • Other documents for proof that you are a deserving applicant and you need the grant.

Grants that are Reviewed by the SASSA

The SASSA does not review all the grants likewise, temporary disability grants. This grant recipient can re-apply if the grant expires. The receiver’s medical statement determines the grant approval. 

On the other side, the SASSA will review the permanent disability grant. This grant is reviewed once every year or the SASSA will review it at any time. The SASSA has the right to check a grant at any time. The SASSA will extend the grant after checking the medical condition of the candidate or to see its financial circumstances.
