Insurers refuse coverage for bedbug removal and damage repairs as experts report worsening infestation and increased workload

Insurers are unlikely to cover the costs of removing bedbugs and repairing damage caused by infestations in the UK. Last week, France experienced a severe outbreak of bedbugs, which prompted concerns of a similar situation in the UK. Pest-control teams have reported an increase in call-outs, particularly in Luton, where residents are resorting to extreme measures, such as throwing away beds and ripping up carpets. Meanwhile, a number of pest control companies have reported a surge in bedbug call-outs, including Pests of London and Pest Extractors. The rise in bedbug infestations has led to concerns over potential transport spread, particularly as England’s Rugby World Cup quarter-final is set to take place in Marseille. Transport for London (TfL) has commenced daily disinfection of tube seats to prevent infestations. However, experts believe that the UK is not prepared for a bedbug invasion and urge caution when using public transport and staying in hotels, particularly in affected areas. Insurers, including Aviva, Admiral, and Axa, have confirmed that their standard home insurance policies do not cover bedbugs.
