If you’re seeking a throwback less steeped in controversy but with a running time that feels approximately as long, Paramount+ will debut a remastered version of Robert Wise’s director’s cut of 1979’s Star Trek: The Motion Picture on April 5, which is apparently “First Contact Day.” This recut of the infamously boring but franchise-launching big-screen Trek was originally assembled in the heyday of the DVD boom and has been largely unavailable in the 20 years since, because the new effects sequences were only finished in standard definition. Soon you will be able to nap through all 143 minutes of it in glorious 4K HD.
