India has Officially Dethroned China as the world’s most populous country, with an estimated Population of 142.8 crore people. In a historic moment, India has officially dethroned China as the world’s most populous country. This milestone marks a significant shift in the global demographic landscape and has far-reaching implications for the future.

India, a country where 50 per cent of the population is under 30, is anticipated to have the world’s fastest-growing major economy. This bodes well for the country’s future, as a young population is often seen as a source of economic growth and innovation. According to projections from the World Population Review (WPR), India’s population was 141.7 crore as of the end of 2022, a little over 50 lakh more than the 141.2 crores declared by China on January 17, when there was the first fall since the 1960s, according to official announcements.

The milestone was supposed to be reached later this year, according to the UN. However, India’s population growth has slowed, and it will still climb until at least 2050, as per WPR predictions. Despite India’s impressive economic progress and strong recovery from the pandemic, a massive program providing free food rations continues to be utilized by a staggering 80 crore individuals. This initiative, the largest of its kind in the world, highlights the persistent needs of certain segments of the population.

Boasting self-sufficiency in food production and ranking second in rice, wheat, and sugar production, India’s economy stands tall as the third-largest in Asia. The country holds the title of the leading importer of edible oils, the largest consumer of sugar, the third-largest market for the purchase of crude oil, the second-largest consumer of steel and gold and the third-largest domestic aviation market in the world.

However, while India continues to flourish, a report by Bloomberg economist Eric Zhu notes that China is currently experiencing a minor recession, referred to as a “growth-crushing headwind for a long time.” Official data from the National Statistics Bureau also reveals that China’s population decreased by 8.5 lakh in 2022 compared to the previous year.
