Robert Lewandoski equals Gerd Muller’s Bundesliga record

Robert Lewandoski was once again on target against Freiburg to equal Gerd Muller’s Bundesliga record of 40 goals in a single season set 49-years ago.

Gerd Muller set the record back in 1972 netting an average goal in every 77 minutes in the entire season which has now been equaled by Lewandoski who has netted an average goal in every 58 minutes.

  • Kylian Mbappe scored twice as PSG beat Bayern Munich
  • Leicester beat Chelsea to lift first FA Cup in their history

The 40-year-old Poland striker has so far netted 40 goals in 28 appearances this season and 18 goals in the last 19 matches played. The only match he hasn’t scored was against Hertha Berlin back in February.

To celebrate his goal, the 40-year-old striker lifted up his t-shirt celebrating the record of Gerd Muller and received a guard of honour from his fellow players and Bayern staff members.

On Saturday, the Bundesliga champions were held to a 2-2 draw by Freiburg. The host drew level in the 29th minute before Leroy Sane gave the visitors the lead in the 53rd minute.

Freiburg captain Gunter equalized for the host when he superbly started and completed a counter attack in the 81st minute of the clash.

Last week, Bayern Munich were crowned Bundesliga champions in a record ninth time when they defeated Bayern Monchengladbach.
