What is Christmas?
Christmas is widely known as an annual festival celebrated in remembrance of Christ’s Birth. Even though it is a festival that belongs to Christians, billions of people around the world celebrate Christmas as a day of happiness, family gatherings, gift-giving, and banqueting. Christmas is one of the festivals that unites people of different nationalities, races, religions, and cultures without any discrimination. For most people, Christmas is just a special day of eating, drinking, and rejoicing. But is it the true meaning of Christmas?
As many of us may believe, Christmas is not a word derived from the word Christ, but rather it is the shortened form of the old English word “Cristes Maesse” which is now known as “Christ’s Mass”. If we translate these words from Greek, Hebrew, and Latin, the word “Cristes” will give a meaning “anointed” and “Maesse” will give a meaning “holy communion”. What we understand from these meanings is that Christmas is not just a day of eating and drinking but rather it is related to some other deeds. Another truth about Christmas is that there is no evidence regarding Christ’s birth on December 25th. However, the Bible which is the sacred book of Christians and Jews with so many fulfilled prophecies and truths keeps silent in the matter of Christmas.
So, what is the real meaning of Christmas? What is the truth behind the birth of Jesus? The birth of Christ was not as merry as we celebrate it nowadays. Mary, his mother conceived him by the Holy Spirit before she was given in marriage. The Jewish society considered this as a sin equal to adultery. Jesus who is the son of God did not have a proper place or palace for his birth. He was laid in a manger. The reason he was born is not to enjoy worldly things or to eat and drink. He was born to suffer and die. He was sent to earth as a sacrifice. Even during his time on earth, Jesus did not have a quiet life. He went through many hardships. The Bible says he did not have a place to lay his head, and he came to serve and not to be served.
So, from what we see in the birth and life of Jesus there is nothing related to the way we celebrate Christmas! We have come a long way from the truth and meaning of Christmas. We just celebrate Christmas as an annual festival. All we focus on is a Christmas tree, gifts, new clothing, social gathering, and feasting. If we truly have the Christmas spirit within us, we will celebrate it in the way Jesus lived. Jesus came to save the sinners. He lived among the people who were oppressed and casted away from the Jewish society of that time. He served them. And he now calls us to serve. He calls us to love our enemies. He calls us to show compassion to the oppressed, poor, and needy. He calls us to reflect his life in ours. We have the right to enjoy and celebrate the birth of Jesus. But we should not deviate from the doctrine or the truth manifested through Christ’s birth and life.

නත්තල් උත්සවය ක්‍රිස්තුස් ජේසුස් වහන්සේගේ උපත සිහිපත් කිරීම සඳහා ලොව පුරා වෙසෙන කිතුනු බැතිමතුන් විසින් සමරනු ලබන වාර්ෂික උත්සවයක් ලෙස ප්‍රචලිතය. එය කිතුනුවන්ට අයත් උත්සවයක් වුවද ලොව පුරා බිලියන සංඛ්‍යාත ජනතාවක් නත්තල් උත්සවය තම ආදරණියන් සමග සතුටින්, තෑගි හුවමාරැ කරගනිමින් සහ භෝජන සංග්‍රහයන් පවත්වමින් උත්සවාකාරයෙන් සමරති. නත්තල් යනු විවිධ ජාතීන්, ජාතීන්, ආගම් සහ සංස්කෘතීන්හි ජන කොටස් කිසිදු ජනවාර්ගිකත්ව භේදයක් නොමැතිව එක්සත් කරන උත්සවයකි. නමුත් වර්ථමානය වන විට බොහෝ පුද්ගලයන්ට නත්තල් උත්සවය යනු භෝජන සංග්‍රහයන් පවත්වමින්, විවිධ ආහාර භුක්තිවිදිමින් හා මත්පැන් පානය කිරීම හා ප්‍රීතිවීම සඳහා වූ විශේෂ දිනයක් පමණි. නමුත් එය නත්තලේ සැබෑ අරුතද?
අප බොහෝ දෙනා විශ්වාස කරන පරිදි, නත්තල යනු ක්‍රිස්තුස් යන වචනයෙන් උපුටා ගත් වචනයක් නොව, එය පැරණි ඉංග්‍රීසි වචනයක් වන “ක්‍රිස්ටස් මේස්” හි කෙටි ස්වරූපය වන අතර එය වර්ථමානයේ “ක්‍රිස්තුස්ගේ ස්කන්ධය” ලෙස හැඳින්වේ. මෙම වචන ග්‍රීක, හෙබ්‍රෙව් සහ ලතින් භාෂාවෙන් පරිවර්තනය කළහොත් “ක්‍රිස්ටස්” යන වචනයට “අභිෂේක ලත්” යන අර්ථය ද “මේස්” යන්නට “ශුද්ධ හවුල” යන්නෙහි අර්ථයක් ද ලැබෙනු ඇත. මෙම අර්ථයන්ගෙන් අප තේරුම් ගතයුතු දෙය නම් නත්තල් යනු ප්‍රියසම්භාෂන පවත්වමින් සතුට සමරන දිනයක් නොව එය පරාර්ථය මුලික කරගත් ක්‍රියාවන්ට මුලිකත්වය දෙනු ලබන උතුම් වු දිනයකි.
ඉතින්, නත්තලේ සැබෑ අරුත කුමක්ද? යේසුස්ගේ උපත පිටුපස ඇති සැබෑ සත්‍යය කුමක්ද? ක්‍රිස්තුස් වහන්සේගේ උපත වර්තමානයේ අප සමරන තරම් ප්‍රීතිමත් එකක් නොවීය. මරියා, ඔහුගේ මවගේ විවාහයට පෙර ශුද්ධාත්මයාණන් විසින් ඇයගේ කුසතුල පිළිසිඳ ගත්තාය. යුදෙව් සමාජය මෙය පරදාර සේවනයට සමාන පාපයක් ලෙස සැලකීය. දෙවියන් වහන්සේගේ පුත් ජේසුස් වහන්සේට ඔහුගේ උපත සඳහා සුදුසු ස්ථානයක් හෝ මාළිගාවක් නොතිබුණි. බිළිදු ජේසුස් වහන්සේ උපතින් පසුව ගව ඔරුවක තැබුවේය. ඔහු ඉපදීමට හේතුව ලෞකික සැප භුක්ති විඳීමට හෝ කෑමට හා බීමට නොවේ. ඔහු ඉපදුණේ දුක් විඳ මිය යාමටයි. යේසුස් වහන්සේ මිහිපිට සිටි කාලය තුළ පවා නිහඩ ජීවිතයක් ගත කළේ නැත. උන්වහන්සේ බොහෝ දුෂ්කරතාවලට මුහුණ දුන්නේය. ජේසුස් වහන්සේ මෙලොව පහල වුයේ දුකට පත්වුවන්ට සේවය කිරීමට බවත් සැප සම්පත් සේවනය නොකිරීමට බවත් ශුද්ධ වු බයිබලයේ සදහන්ය.
නත්තලේ සැබෑ සත්‍යයෙන් හා අර්ථයෙන් අපි බොහෝ දුර පැමිණ ඇත්තෙමු. අපි නත්තල් උත්සවය වාර්ෂික උත්සවයක් ලෙස සමරමු. අප අවධානයට යොමු කරන්නේ නත්තල් ගසක්, තෑගි, නව ඇඳුම්, සමාජ එක්රැස්වීම් පමණි. අප තුළ නත්තලේ අර්ථය සැබවින්ම තිබේ නම්, අපි එය යේසුස් ජීවත් වූ ආකාරයට සමරන්නෙමු. යේසුස් වහන්සේ මෙලොව පහළවුයේ පව්කාරයන්ව ගලවාගැනීමටයි. ඔහු ජීවත් වූයේ එකල පීඩාවට පත්ව සිටි යුදෙව් සමාජයෙන් ඉවතට විසිවූ ජනතාව අතර ය. උන්වහන්සේ ඔවුන්ට සේවය කළේය. උන්වහන්සේ අපට දේශනා කරනුයේ සේවය කරන්න කියායි. අපේ සතුරන්ට ප්‍රේම කරන්න කියා උන්වහන්සේ අපට ආරාධනා කරයි. පීඩිත, දුප්පතුන් සහ අගහිඟකම් ඇති අයට අනුකම්පා කරන ලෙස උන්වහන්සේ අපට ආරාධනා කරයි. උන්වහන්සේ අපෙන් ඉල්ලා සිටින්නේ උන්වහන්සේගේ ජීවිතය අප තුළ පිළිබිඹු කරන ලෙසයි. යේසුස් වහන්සේගේ උපත භුක්ති විඳීමට හා සැමරීමට අපට අයිතියක් ඇත. නමුත් අප ක්‍රිස්තුස් වහන්සේගේ උපත හා ජීවිතය තුළින් ප්‍රකාශිත ධර්මයෙන් හෝ සත්‍යයෙන් බැහැර නොවිය යුතුය.

நத்தார் பண்டிகையானது ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் இயேசுவின் பிறப்பை நினைவுகூரும் வகையில் கொண்டாடப்படும். இப் பண்டிகையானது கிறிஸ்தவர்களுக்கானது என்ற போதிலும் உலகெங்கும் உள்ள கோடிக்கணக்கான மக்கள் இனமத வேறுபாடின்றி தமது உறவினர்களுடன் மகிழ்ச்சியையும் பரிசுகளையும் பரிமாறி கொண்டாடுவது வழக்கம். ஆனால் இது நத்தார் பண்டிகையின் உண்மையான அர்த்தமா?
