Protein bars have become very popular but why? Well, they can be a convenient snack or meal supplement that will give you carbs, Protein, vitamins, and minerals to your diet. They can also stop you craving unhealthy sugary snacks between meals. They can fuel a workout and support muscle repair after exercise. They shouldn’t replace healthy varied meals but clearly have a part to play in a healthy diet.
We have to admit that we both enjoy protein bars and have noticed benefits such as reducing our hunger pangs between meals as well as feeling more energised and recover quicker from a hard workout.
The problem is, they are so damn expensive! Surely, they can be made at home with the knowledge that they are used with natural ingredients and taste great.
That’s when Aileen decided to make her own and they ARE delicious, easy to make and a fraction of the cost. She has called them Protein Bites and she would love to share the process of making them with you.
The average protein bars can cost well over £1 each but Aileen’s Protein Bites cost 34p for a 42g portion. Here’s how –
To make a baker’s dozen (13) bites, you will need:
200g of dates. Not the ready diced dates as they are too dry but you will need to dice them up before adding them to the mix.
180g of high protein Granola.
3 tablespoons of cocoa powder mixed with 3 tablespoons of boiling water
4 tablespoons of peanut butter
1 tablespoon of oil – rapeseed, olive, sunflower or coconut
1 tablespoon of runny honey
Salt – one pinch
Large mixing bowl
Place the diced dates in the large mixing bowl, pour in the cocoa powder / water mix and stir with wooden spoon
Now add all the remaining ingredients, except the Desiccated coconut and stir until all the contents are evenly mixed
Now for the fun part. Line a baking tray with non-stick baking paper then delve into the mixture with your hands and create your protein bites. There is an element of personal choice but you want to create bites that are about 42g each, the size of a golf ball, as this should produce about 13 bites.
Next, roll them in desiccated coconut, place in the baking tray and leave in the fridge for 2-3 hours or ideally overnight.
