Data Entry, Definition and Relevance

Humans have been keeping records even back to the days when we were still cave dwellers. We painted cave walls, we carved words on rocks… I think, even back then, our ancestors realized this one, crucial truth:

Information is an important and powerful tool.

But gone are the days when we needed monoliths and stone slabs to store information. Ever since the world turned to digitalization, the need for bulky, troublesome hard copies has been significantly reduced. Now, data can be converted from inconvenient paper documents into much more practical electronic files.

This is the essence of data Entry.

I’d say that what was mentioned above would be sufficient to make anyone believe that data entry is important. But that might just be me. For those that need further convincing, here are more reasons to believe:

First, let’s find out how data is officially defined.

Oxford defines data as facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis; things known or assumed as facts, making the basis of reasoning or calculation. Data is usually used to denote numbers, but really it can be anything. It can come in the form of words, sounds, images, etc.

It’s the raw unprocessed pieces of reality that surrounds us. The speed and the intensity of the wind. The number of people who commutes daily. The teenage population’s preferred shops. The amount of fuel an airplane needs to be able to fly. The price of flour.

Seems random, right? Just goes to prove that data is everywhere.

But in a way, data is what makes our highly technological world go round.

Yes, it’s that important.

But only when they are compiled and processed into information.
