The game stars green haired Joe and blue haired Mac, they are cavemen who battle through prehistoric themed levels and use weapons like bones, boomerangs, fire, flints, electricity, stone wheel and the good old fashioned club.
The story is based around a tribe of rival cavemen who kidknapped a group of women. Joe and Mac can be played as a single or two player game, in some versions players can damage each other.
At the end of boss stages, you can choose different routes in the Arcade, Amiga, Mega Drive, MS-DOS and Zeebo ports, after defeating the end game boss, there are 3 exits, each one with a slightly different ending.

THE PORTS OF JOE AND MAC
The ports varied in name, from Caveman Ninja, Joe and Mac and also Joe and Mac: Caveman Ninja.
It was the SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis version that was the closest match to the arcade original. Whilst the SNES game was a reworked version. In the SNES game it features an overworld map for choosing the levels, in other versions there is no map and each stage must be played.
Many versions of the game had different bosses and on some of the ports you could not choose an exit and there was only a single ending to the game.
The Japanese version of the game includes a beginning scene in which cavemen enter a hut. They emerge while dragging cavewomen by their hair. The scene was removed from the US release, with Data East stating, “We didn’t want kids to see [the Japanese display] and think it was okay.”
