The Simpsons: Bart Vs. the Space Mutants Game Comparison

Released: 1991

Genre: Platformer

Publisher: Acclaim

The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants is a platformer, developed by Imagineering and Arc Development and published by Acclaim Entertainment and Ocean.

Released in 1991 at the height of popularity for the Matt Groening tv show, the game was very popular at the time, and for me was included as a pack-in title with my Cartoon Classics Amiga 500 computer.

PLAYING SIMPSONS: BART VS. THE SPACE MUTANTS

The aim in The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants is to control Bart Simpson across five levels, trying to prevent aliens take over the world.

Bart is the only one who knows about the invasion, and using his 3D glasses, he you can identify aliens in human form. Very much like the 1988 John Carpenter film, They Live.

John Nada: I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass – and I’m all out of bubblegum.

You must prevent the aliens from collecting the items they need for their ‘Ultimate Weapon’. The items include purple objects in the first level, hats in the second, balloons in the third, exit signs in the fourth, and nuclear rods in the fifth.

You can navigate the levels on foot or with a skateboard, a side mission is to convince the Simpsons family that they aliens exist, they will in turn help you on certain levels.

The levels uses elements of The Simpsons and some of the television humor appears in the game: for example, in the first level Bart can make a prank call to the bartender Moe in order for him to run outside so that the player can spray paint his purple apron (an example of an item that the aliens need) into a red color that the aliens do not want. The game includes some minigames.
