Street Fighter, the beginnings of the jewel in the crown for Capcom was released in 1987. Though the original wasn’t the game that defined the series, it began it and that my friends is very defining indeed!

The original Street Fighter did indeed help to define the traditional one vs one fighting games that preceeded it, inspiring the incredible sequel, along with many of SNK’s amazing classics too from Fatal Fury to King of Fighters.

PLAYING STREET FIGHTER

You take control of a young Japanese martial artist named Ryu, who competed in an international martial arts tournament to test and prove his strngth. This is the only character you control in the original game, however if in 2 player mode, the player controlling Ken defeats Ryu, they can play the remainder of the game as Ken.

At the begining you choose the country of your first fight, Japan, USA, China and England. You will then have two fights in your chosen country before moving on to the next country (not your choosing).

There are two types of bonus game in Street Fighter, a brick breaking bonus game and a table breaking game. The last 2 fights are based in Thailand, where you will meet your arch nemesis, Sagat.

MEET YOUR OPPONENTS

There are 10 opponents in Street Fighter, including the end boss Sagat, who is Ryu’s mentor and a deadly Muay Thai master. Here are all of the opponents Ryu must defeat.

UK character and punk rocker Birdie’s stage actually features a pub called “Blockheads Pub”, clearly in reference to Ian Dury and The Blockheads.

The other UK character is a stereotypical english gent type called “Eagle”, clearly Capcom see the UK as golf obsessed based on those names. I dread to think how a 3rd character would look called “Bogey”.

Adon, Gen and Birdie all returned to the Street Fighter franchise in the Alpha series of games.

IN DEVELOPMENT

Street Fighter was produced by Takashi Nishiyama, who ic credited as Piston Takashi in the game, it was also planned by Hiroshi Matsumoto, who is credited as Finish Hiroshi. Both men left Capcom after the original Street Fighter and went to work for SNK, and they deceloped most of SNK’s big fighters. They much later also worked on Street Fighter IV with Capcom again.

The designers of Street Fighter took huge inspiration from Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon, both featuring international fighting tournaments. It probably took a lot of inspiration from early video games too, such as Yie Ar Kung Fu and Karate Champ.

THE STREET FIGHTER PORTS

Street Fighter was first ported to the PC Engine CD in 1988 under the name “Fighting Street” in Japan, later released in North America for the TurboGrafx-CD, with a remastered soundtrack to boot!

U.S. Gold were responsible for the home computer versions, the ports were developed by Tiertex. A DOS version was also developed by Micro Talent.

The C64 had two versions of the game, the USA version developed by Pacific Dataworks and publsihed by Capcom USA, the PAL version was developed by Tiertex and U.S. Gold.
