Natural Vanilla Lip Balm (use somewhere)

If you are just starting to make homemade body products, this homemade Vanilla Lip Balm recipe is great to start with. It’s super simple, only 3 ingredients that just need to be melted together.

There are many, many things I LOVE about the Colorado climate. But my dry winter skin ISN’T one of them.

As someone with dry and sensitive skin, it’s kind of a nightmare really. My skin needs tons of lotion and my lips have been super chapped. I can’t get enough chapstick!

First, all it takes to make it is melting ingredients in a bowl over a double boiler. It’s the easiest craft ever, except when you hand someone a tube and tell them it’s homemade, they will be seriously impressed because it sounds much more difficult than it actually is.

And second, I can control what goes in and what doesn’t go in my lip balm. I was pretty happy with the peppermint formula, but this vanilla version is my favorite. It’s softer thanks to the addition of the sweet almond oil. The only thing I might do differently next time is add a bit more of the vanilla oil as I love all things vanilla.

Homemade Vanilla Lip Balm Recipe

I love not having chapped lips in the winter, but I don’t like regular lip balm from the store. I know there are a lot of natural choices out there, but they can be expensive and hard to find. Plus they still often contain “natural flavors” and artificial fragrances….whatever those might be. Some lip balms even contain gluten so if you are very sensitive like I am, it might help to make homemade.

It turns out that it’s really easy to make your own lip balm that is perfect for adding moisture to dry lips! It only takes a few ingredients with this simple recipe for homemade Lip Balm and you can “flavor” it with any scent you want. Lip balm is a must have for those of us that live in a dry place and whose lips need some healing, especially in the winter months..

How To Make Vanilla Lip Balm

Makes 2 circle chapsticks

Vanilla Chapstick Supplies Needed

  • 1 ½ teaspoon avocado oil
  • 1 teaspoon beeswax pellets
  • ½ teaspoon shea butter
  • 5-8 drops of vanilla essential oil
  • Microwave safe bowl
  • Spatula or spoon for stirring
  • 2 circle chapstick containers

Which brand of essential oil should I use?

Vanilla Lip Balm Directions

  1. Screw the middle piece of the circle Chapstick container into the lid, not the bottom of the container. Make sure you hear a click.
  2. Add the beeswax to the avocado oil and microwave, or use a double boiler until melted.
  3. Then, add the shea butter into the mixture, stir, and heat until melted as well.
  4. Add in your drops of essential oil and mix well.
  5. Pour the mixture into the containers and just fill until it touches the middle piece. Filling too much will cause it to leak and won’t secure properly.
  6. Let cool for a few hours. You can also play in your freezer for 30 minutes to speed up the process.
  7. Close the Chapstick container until it clicks. Flip over, and it is ready to use!
  8. The middle piece should securely attach to the bottom, and leave a circle of Chapstick to use.

Vanilla Chapstick Notes

  • Use any carrier oil you prefer. Avocado oil is great for your skin, but coconut oil and jojoba oil work well too. You can also use an infused oil as well for further skin benefits and smell.
  • Both the microwave and the double boiler methods work well with this recipe.
  • You can choose to use any essential oil of your choice or leave out the oil if you wish.
  • This recipe makes it not very thick and leaves a slightly glossy feel on your lips. It is not heavy like other Chapsticks.
  • If you want a vegan recipe, swap out the beeswax pellets for candelilla wax.
  • Adding in a few drops of vitamin e oil will help to further preserve the lip balm. If you want to add some Vitamin E. oil  or Organic Rosemary Extract to act as a natural preservative, you can do that as well. Just a few drops will do since this is a small recipe.

Tips for Making Homemade Vanilla Lip Balm

  • If you are looking for a true essential oil to use in this recipe that would have the same notes of vanilla, I would recommend Balsam of Peru Oil. It has a wonderful woody, vanilla-like scent that would be perfect for lip balm.
  • So here’s all you need to make a batch of at least 10-12 lip balms depending on the size of the containers you have to put them in.
  • Use a saucepan just for making body products like this, not one of your regular cooking saucepans. The beeswax is nearly impossible to clean out so I just use a pan I picked up at the thrift store.
  • Don’t want to make your own Lip Balm and would rather buy it instead? I love the natural lip balms from Made On!

Variations to Homemade Vanilla Lip Balm

  • Add Peppermint Oil instead of the vanilla for a fun minty scent
  • Skip all of the essential oils for an unscented version (use expeller pressed coconut oil as well)
  • Add in a bit of honey for an additional moisturizing quality
  • Add Mango Butter as an alternative to Shea Butter
  • Add Cocoa Butter instead of Shea Butter for a “chocolate” scented lip balm!

FAQs

Can I use vanilla extract in lip balm?

Most extracts are made with alcohol which is very drying to the skin. I wouldn’t recommend adding regular vanilla extract to flavor this recipe. Use a safe essential oil or a fragrance oil that is made for skin.

Can you use mint extract in lip balm?

Same answer as above. The alcohol in an extract isn’t good for your skin. Use Peppermint Oil instead of extract.
