Types of Materials Used for Bricks

Brick is an indispensable and oldest of all building materials. Bricks are also most durable, since they are foundations, pillars and Brick walls that are constructed since thousands of years and they are still intact. Bricks are generally used for constructing walls, especially the outer wall surface.

Brick: How it is defined?

Brick is used to denote building unit that is made of shaped clay. But in modern times it is referred to as any stone or clay-based building material that is joined with cementitious mortar used for construction purposes. Bricks are 4 inches wide and 8 inches long with varied thicknesses.

Larger stone or clay-based building units used to lay foundations are called blocks.

Bricks can be categorized in many ways. Like you can divide brick into different types- ones used for facing (exposed and visible) as opposed to backing bricks – ones used structurally, hidden from view.

There is another way you can categorize bricks i.e. based on how they are manufactured-unfired, brick that is air cured and fired, bricks baked in ovens so that they harden.

Bricks can be common bricks or engineering bricks. Common bricks are used for residential construction and engineering bricks are used for civil engineering projects like roads and bridges.

Bricks can be categorized based on the raw materials:

In modern times common bricks are classified based on the raw materials and method used to manufacture them.

Here are different types of bricks:

  • Concrete bricks
  • Burnt clay bricks
  • Firebricks
  • Sand lime bricks (calcium silicate bricks)
  • Fly ash clay bricks
  • Concrete Bricks:

Solid concrete is used to make concrete bricks and have become popular. These types of bricks are generally used in facades, fences and for providing an aesthetic look. Concrete bricks can be made in such a way that they provide different colors when pigments are added while manufacturing. But concrete bricks should be avoided to be used below ground applications.

The most common use of concrete bricks is for fences and internal brickwork.

  • Burnt Clay Bricks:

They are the classic form of bricks and are created by pressing wet clay into molds. They are then dried and fired in kilns. This is one of the oldest building materials. These bricks are found in ancient constructions of the world.

They are solid blocks of hardened clay and are usually reddish in color.

Burnt bricks are used for masonry walls, foundations and columns.

  • Sand Lime Bricks:

Sand lime bricks are manufactured by mixing sand, fly ash and lime. Pigments are added for color. The mixture is molded under pressure. The materials are bond together by chemical reaction, which occurs when wet bricks dry under heat and pressure.

These bricks are not fired in kilns like the burnt clay bricks.

Sand lime bricks are preferred over clay bricks because:

  • These bricks are good at strength for load bearing structures.
  • Their color is gray as opposed to reddish color.
  • Edges are straight and precise thus, makes construction easier.
  • Less mortar is needed during construction.
  • When pigments are used bricks can be used for ornamental purposes.

Sand lime bricks are used for structural foundations and walls, exposed brick walls and pillar. They are specially used for ornamental uses.

  • Fire Bricks:

They are also known as refractory bricks, and are manufactured from specially formulated earth with high aluminum oxide content. When these bricks are burnt, they can withstand high temperatures without the size, strength or shape being affected.

They are generally used for furnaces, pizza ovens, outdoor brick barbecues and chimneys.

  • Fly Ash Clay Bricks:

Fly Ash Clay Bricks are made from clay and fly ash. Infact, fly ash is a byproduct of coal burning – fired at about 1,000 degrees Celsius as fly ash contains high volume of calcium oxide.

Fly ash clay bricks are described as self-cementing, since they expand when exposed to moisture. This quality to expand, can also produce pop-out failure.

Fly ash clay bricks are lighter in weight then clay or concrete bricks.

They are usually used for structural walls, foundations, pillars and where improved fire resistance is required.
