Shrimp Producers Based in Ecuador Join IBM’s Food Trust Ecosystem Based on Blockchain. According to a press release dated May 6, Ecuador based Sustainable Shrimp Partnership (SSP) is officially joining hands with IBM’s Food Trust Ecosystem with the use of IBM’s blockchain technology in order to ensure the quality of SSP Shrimp products.

Reports suggest that by joining the Food Trust Ecosystem, consumers along with retailers will have access to production and development data on the SSP shrimp products.

Pamela Nath –  Director of SSP, stated that “Our aim is to have SSP premium quality shrimp in supermarkets and on menus where the consumer can scan the QR code and find out which farm it is from, how it was farmed, and critical indicators on its food safety and sustainability profile.”

The SSP is a group of firms who are a part of shrimp production. In compliance with an article by Seafoodsource, there are a total of eleven Ecuadorian shrimp farms which primarily produce shrimps. (as of April)

In the month of March, The United States of America imported approximately 1000 metric tons of shrimps which were manufactured by the partnership.

It was in the month of October ‘18 when IBM came out with its Food Trust Ecosystem, and eighteen months of testing.

Gartner (a significant research firm) claimed that about twenty percent of the world’s top grocers, by the end of 2025 will be active blockchain users to provide quality assurance of food products.

One of the reports by Gartner praised blockchain and said that it is the most appropriate tool for tracking food. Furthermore, Joanne Joliet (senior analyst) asserted that grocers would be the ones who will drive blockchain development.

As reported earlier, Albertsons Companies (American food and drug chain) also merged with IBM Food Trust Ecosystem on April 11. Albertsons joined the Food Trust Ecosystem intending to track romaine lettuce.
