A bone of him shall not be broken

  John 19:36; Psalm 34:20, Exodus 12:46

John 19:36

v36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. (KJV)

Psalm 34:20

v20 He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken. (KJV)

Psalm 34:20 refers to all righteous people; it’s a Psalm about praise to God for protecting the righteous, it’s all about reading the full context of the passage. From what I have observed the gospel writers have a tendency of parachuting right into a middle of the passage ignoring the immediate context as long as it sounds like Jesus. The whole psalm says nothing about the messiah and on the other hand the paschal lamb of Exodus 12 was to be without blemish or spot, Jesus however was mutilated and disfigured beyond recognition so he couldn’t have been accepted as a Passover lamb as per the regulations for Passover lambs.

Unless you reinterpret “without blemish or spot” to mean Jesus’ sinless nature and therefore he was spiritually without blemish, not physically. Nonetheless the quoted passage seems to be taken as fulfillment when Jesus bones were not literally broken. If that’s the case then the notion of without blemish should also be taken literally as it was a prerequisite for all Passover lambs. Any cut or bruise would render that lamb unfit for sacrifice. It’s God who made these rules.

Exodus 12:5

v5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats: (KJV)
