Nigerian Rower seeks first ever 2020 Olympic ticket

Nigeria rowing and sailing team member, Michael Akpos who made his debut at the 2019 All Africa games in Morroco has expressed his joy following his successful participation at the tournament, finishing fourth at the light-weight men’s single skull.

Though Michael describes the tournament as challenging in a chat with brila.net, he believes it was a good experience for him and his team and thinks the exposure is good for him moving forward.

Despite making it to the finals in the lightweight men single skulls, he identified Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria as the toughest competition he faced “These countries gave me tough time but it was a great experience, I gained a lot of things, I was exposed to new techniques also met new people.”

The Nigerian Rower also pointed out that the difference in the kind of boats used by the Nigerian team to train as well as other facilities used at competitions puts the team at a disadvantage and believes it affected their performance at the 2019 All Africa games.

Michael Akpos meanwhile has revealed that he has shifted his focus to the African Championship in Tunisia, October 2019 which will also serves as a 2020 Olympic qualifier.

He believes the exposure from other tournaments has given him the necessary things to help his quest in securing his 1st Olympic Ticket.
