Citi Open: Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Nick Kyrgios Preview and Prediction

Two entertaining characters will go head to head when Stefanos Tsitsipas will face Nick Kyrgios in the semi-final of the Citi Open.

Tsitsipas is the top seed at the tournament, and he has enjoyed a relatively easy path to the semi-final. He faced Tommy Paul in the first round and beat him 6-3, 7-5. The game was closer than the scoreline makes it seem, but Tsitsipas prevailed in the decisive moments to progress to the second round. He faced Jordan Thompson next and defeated him 6-3, 7-6(4). Tsitsipas served really well in the game. He won 85% of the points on his first serve.

In the quarter-final, Benoit Paire was his opponent. That game was the toughest one on paper, but he managed to scrape through. The first set was a competitive one, but Tsitsipas took it 7-5. Paire came close to taking it, and the failure to do so knocked the wind out of him. Tsitsipas ran away with the match from there on and took the second set 6-0. It was a great way to prepare for the semi-final.

This is the first tournament Tsitsipas is playing since Wimbledon. He got knocked out in the first round there at the hands of Thomas Fabbiano. Two of his three ATP titles have come on hard courts, and he will hope to increase that tally in Washington. Kyrgios and Tsitsipas have not always been on cordial terms.

The two had a feud on social media where they criticized each other. But they paired for the doubles in Washington, and that seems to have buried the hatchet. Even though they lost in the round of 16, they shared some great moments on the court. The two were gushing with praise for each other afterwards, and it’s safe to say that the handshake will be warm when they play in the semi-final.

Kyrgios is unseeded in the tournament, and he has played one more match than Tsitsipas. He beat Thai-Son Kwiatkowski in the first round in straight sets to get his tournament underway. Gilles Simon was his opponent in the next round, and Kyrgios prevailed 6-4, 7-6(5). His serving was a highlight that day as he won a staggering 90% points on his first serve. Kyrgios then went on to beat Yoshihito Nishiko in the round of 16 in straight sets.

Kyrgios beat Norbert Gombos in the quarter-final to progress to the semi-finals. The two youngsters are yet to meet in a professional singles match. Their doubles venture in the Citi Open is the only time they have shared a court. The first singles clash is bound to be an entertaining one.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Nick Kyrgios Prediction

Tsitsipas should do justice to his top seeding and get the win against Kyrgios. It won’t be easy, as the Australian can give anyone a tough game on his day. The game will go the distance, and each player will take at least one set. But Tsitsipas should have the mettle to come through.
