A notification released by the I-T department on Sunday had said that no further extension will be given.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) which frames policies for the I-T Department has extended the deadline. The earlier deadline was September 30 of this year.
“Building a better tomorrow! To reap seamless benefits of income tax services, complete the vital link before December 31st 2019”, read the statement.
Supreme Court Order
The Supreme Court, in its judgement in September 2018, upheld the constitutional validity of Aadhaar scheme. The court had also ruled that Aadhaar linking would be mandatory for the filing of I-T returns and allotment of PAN.
Aadhaar Number is a 12-digit random number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of Indian (UIDAI) to the residents of India after satisfying the verification process laid down by the Authority. Any individual, irrespective of age and gender, who is a resident of India, may voluntarily enroll to obtain an Aadhaar number.
A permanent account number is a ten character unique alphanumeric figure issued by the Income Tax Department to persons as well as companies.
In order to link Aadhaar with PAN, a person’s name must be identical in both the documents.
