It’s winter, folks! Cold winds breathe our world anew, as we walk by the winter sun, and daydream of hearth-fire, waking up a new-born smile. Cold is good if we are warm inside.  

Now is the time for HYGGE, a Danish concept, considered to bring in happiness. An adjective used to mean cosy or enjoyable, Hygge is an obsession.

Sit back in a cosy room, light the room with candles, snuggle into soft furnishings, and just feel the warmth – well, this is what is hygge. I’m sure you could feel the warmth and the cosy aura as you were reading. 


Hygge (pronounced hue-guh not hoo-gah) – a Danish word used when acknowledging a feeling or moment, whether alone or with friends, at home or out, ordinary or extraordinary as cosy, charming or special.

Hygge is not a word, it is a feeling, it is a concept – a cosy contentment. The feel can be intrinsic or extrinsic. It is like a soothing balm, that calms your nerves. It may differ from person to person – to a reader, it might be drowning oneself in a treasure of words, to an adventurer it might be out adventuring, to a couch potato, it would be snuggling in fluffy cosy sheets, it could be curling up by the fire, burning soft-scented candles, wrapping oneself in a window seat and watch the world go by – it is all about keeping things simple, appreciating the simple things that bring joy to life.  – the term must be felt. 


Rhyming with words like hug and snug, it gives that intimate feel. A magical word indeed, created by Meik Wiking, who describes it as a combination of comfort, togetherness and well-being. It is something that money can’t buy – it is a way of BEING. Hygge is non-negotiable, and vital to a happier, healthier life. 

It lies in exploring and living the simple joys of life. It could be just your idea of happiness – practicing gratitude, dinner with family, basking in the sun, drinking a hot kappa coffee, hugging a baby, anything. Incredibly gratifying, these simple acts can open a heaven of comfort and joy and pull one out of a trauma. The perfect antidote to pall away your gloom – Hygge.

HYGGE – We all need it to live well.
