Today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:
1. Several members of the Biafra Zionists Federation, BZF, were early Monday morning arrested in Enugu alongside their self-acclaimed leader, Barr. Benjamin Onwuka.
A combined team of security operatives made up of the Department of State Services, DSS, and the Nigeria Police were said to have been involved in the operation after another failed attempt to enter the Enugu Government House for the inauguration of Biafra.
2. The Federal Government has informed FIFA that it officially recognizes Amaju Pinnick, as the president of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
Laolu Akande, the media aide to Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, who confirmed the development, said the FG had already conveyed to FIFA its firm position recognizing Amaju Pinnick-led NFF as the current and only NFF Exco.
3. FIFA has confirmed that Nigeria will not be banned, following the intervention of the federal government.
Former media officer of the Super Eagles, Colin Udoh, confirmed that Nigeria escaped ban after Federal Government recognised and affirmed Pinnick Amaju as legitimate and sole president of NFF.
4. The Delta State Police Command has arrested seven suspects over the alleged murder of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, task force chairman, Emmanuel Akpokevughe, DAILY POST can report.
The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Muhammad Mustafa, who disclosed this on Monday, said the suspects were being interrogated and investigated, disclosing that,”seven of them are in custody.”
5. The United States has stated that killings in the Middle Belt and northern Nigeria were caused by impunity and non-prosecution of the perpetrators.
Deputy Chief of Mission and Charge de Affaires, US Embassy in Nigeria, David Young, said the Nigerian government should strengthen its laws to deal with killers.
6. Boko Haram insurgents have killed scores of people and torched several houses in the last three days in Borno.
The Police Command on Monday announced that a high number of casualties was recorded after the sect attacked Malari, Guzamala Local Government Area.
7. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday filed charges at an Ikeja High Court against another serving senator, Albert Bassey, for allegedly receiving 12 cars as bribes worth N254 million.
Bassey, 45, who is representing Akwa-Ibom North-East, allegedly received the vehicles between 2010 and 2014 from Olajide Omokore, a businessman, when he (Bassey) served as the Akwa-Ibom Commissioner for Finance.
8. The force commander, Operation Whirl Stroke, Major General Adeyemi Yekini, on Monday confirmed that troops had killed 21 herdsmen between Benue and Nasarawa states in the last few weeks.
General Ayeni also confirmed the death of a soldier, while two others were injured last Saturday along Gbamjimba-Akor-Tomata in Guma Local Government Area of Benue state.
9. The National Examinations Council (NECO) on Monday released the June/July 2018 Senior Secondary Schools Certificate Examination results.
Acting Registrar of the Council, Abubakar Gana, who made the disclosure, said out of the 1,041,536 candidates who sat for the examinations, only 742,455 of the candidates got at least five credit passes, including Mathematics and the English Language.
10. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified that it was not investigating the accounts, appropriation and administration of funds of Benue State government.
The commission explained that it was only probing some officials who were accused of diversion of public funds, money laundry and related offences.
