(You guys have had 3 new updates just this week, this is very rare)
So for those who don’t know what Scoliosis is, it is a sideways curvature in the normally straight vertical path of the spine, like an s shape
I discovered I had scoliosis in 2014 and had the Operation for it in 2015. You could say that scoliosis was one of the causes of my social anxiety as I tended to walk in an abnormal way and it gave me the fear that people were thinking “look how weird she walks” or “she looks disabled”. Once someone said to me that I was walking like a pregnant women and that hurt.
So I stopped PE and all other sports in year 6 (11 years) in order not to make the curvature worse and I had the operation in year 8 (13 years) and started PE again in year 9 (14 years)
Once I had my operation I grew slightly taller then shrunk back to my height of 5’5 and i can no longer grow (the two inches of growth that the doctors tell you about is a lie). I stayed in hospital for like 2 weeks and went home the week before christmas. I then resumed school in February and it was fine as I got a lot of welcome backs even from people I didn’t know
I’d say the worst parts of the operation was and still is the constant worrying and pitying people gave me e.g “you can’t do that because of your back” or you must be bionic as you have a metal spine” and worst of all “how can you sit so straight” as the operation improved my posture
I went through Physical Therapy which I hated but loved hydrotherapy (physical therapy in a pool). And I still walk weirdly sometimes
Somedays I just wish to be normal and to not have a metal spine, but it did make me who I’am today so I’am thankful for that. Plus if you have the operation, it makes you one of the bravest people in the world as it is quite risky (there is a chance of paralysation). Even celebrities have scoliosis (e.g Usain Bolt, James Charles, etc) so anyone can get it
