Hand Foot & Mouth Arrived – Symptoms & Tips

So this week has been eventful to say the least! We started the week with both kids having temperatures which was probably the first sign. Actually it started Sunday and Corey was sick a few times. We thought this must be a sickness bug. He really wasn’t himself and just had zero energy. He also had the shivers which really worried me and I started to think this was maybe more than just sickness. On Monday morning Corey woke us at 4am being sick and for the rest of the day he just lay on the sofa sleeping on and off.

There is literally nothing worse than seeing your children poorly as a parent you’d do anything to take it away from them. But by Monday night he had really perked up and wasn’t sick again. On Tuesday morning he begged and begged to go to school so I phoned the school to check it was ok and they said he was fine to go in. On Tuesday night he came home from school and within 5 minutes of being in the door he had fallen asleep on my bed.

At this point Derry had been fine but around 5pm on Tuesday she started to become whiny and clingy. When she came over to me I felt her body and she was very hot I took her temp and it was 39.2 but did reach 39.8 and she has fitted/seizures due to her temp so we were really worried!

I gave her calpol and she instantly fell asleep on me which isn’t like her at all she hasn’t done that since she was like 6 months. This night was the worse night sleep we have ever had or should I say not had hah! Through the night she woke every 10 minutes literally every 10 minutes screaming and a few times was sick. Through the night she kept saying her toes were hurting. We checked them but they looked fine. Around 4.30am she woke being very sick and we ended up getting up then. When we came into the livingroom her toes, feet and elbows were covered in huge Blisters. I instantly thought chicken pox. She wouldn’t eat move or walk. The blisters were pearly grey coloured and a few had black dots in the centre.

I was struggling to get her temperature down from 38+ and she wouldn’t even drink we were all exhausted. Corey went to school and we took her the doctors and they said it was hand foot and Mouth. As the day went on she just got worse and worse. The spots began to spread over her whole body and her toes became so sore. The looked so inflamed and had huge blisters on. By 6pm I had taken her back to the doctors just to make sure it was Hand foot and mouth and not chicken pox. I was worried I was giving her Nurofen as this shouldn’t be given with chicken pox so just wanted a second opinion. Also by the name you assume its jsut going to be in those places when infact her whole body is covered literally everywhere in tiny and big blisters . Again it was confirmed as HFM and the doctor had seen a lots of cases in that one day. Today is Sunday and she has finally started to eat and last night was the first night she slept well. She hasn’t let us bath her I think the water was burning her blisters so I was just cloth washing her down but today she asked for a bath which I was pleased about. But today her mouth blisters are VERY big and sore and her eye lids are abit puffy but we are on day 3-4 so it should start to clear itself up and we are praying it doesn’t pass to anyone else!

IT IS VERY CONTAGIOUS!

MY TOP TIPS! –

  1. Buy some anti bacterial wipes and just keep giving everything a wipe over to stop the spread like tables etc. Ive been spraying Dettol spray over the furniture, mattress, door handles floors and so on just to try keep the spreading chances lower.
  2. Wash bedding everyday until the spots start to fade. Again to stop spreading and to stop you going around in circles with catching it and then recovering then catching again. ALWAYS WASH THE INFECTED PERSONS BEDDING,CLOTHES AND TOWELS SEPARATE.
  3. Keep physical contact lower like letting your children hug or kiss each other.
  4. At night we lathered her hands and feet in sudocrem and then put socks on her feet and hands. It has really helped us. Stopped the blisters rubbing the blanket and scratching the tops off.
  5. Keep on top of the fever give it half hour before the dosage is due to keep them topped up using Calpol and nurofen for children.
  6. Ice lollies! Derry hasn’t wanted to eat or drink for the pain of her mouth ulcers so ice lollies have been great for us to keep fluids up.
  7. Soft foods like pastas and soups that are hot in temperature as they will burn the mouth ulcers.
  8. Dont do baths everyday as you are spreading the bacteria into the water and then moving it around their body. Use a cloth to wash them down abit at time so your not spreading it.
  9. Wash hands every 20 minutes and avoid touching other parts of the body especially the eyes.
  10. if your child is still in nappies when changing the nappy only do one wipe for the wipe then use another as you are spreading the bacteria. And soak dummies in hot boiling water to kill bacteria.

Symptoms of hand, foot, and mouth disease often include:

  • Fever
  • Reduced appetite
  • Sore throat
  • Feeling unwell
  • Painful mouth sores that usually begin as flat red spots
  • Rash of flat red spots that may blister on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and sometimes the knees, elbows, buttocks, and/or genital area

These symptoms usually appear in stages, not all at once. Not everyone will have all of these symptoms. Some people may show no symptoms at all, but they can still pass the virus to others.
