A child and a man have died after being swept off rocks at a Beach in Sydney's south east.

The nine-year-old boy and man were fishing when they were swept into the water at the southern end of Little Bay just after 3pm.

A full-scale rescue operation was launched, with the child winched from the water and airlifted to a nearby golf course for treatment.

He could not be revived.

The man, believed to be in his 40s, was pulled from the water by lifesavers and CPR was performed on the rocks but he did not survive.

A crime scene has been established and police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
