RTX ON! NVIDIA Ampere GPU: Stronger, Faster and Cheaper?

Gamers rejoice as there’s some talk going on about NVIDIA’s new Ampere GPU 3000 series, that’s going to be coming to us very soon. The new lineup which was Initially expected in the first half of next year may make an appearance as early as March. But there’s a catch and its that the 7 nm chips may not hit shelves until several months later.

Whats NVIDIA Ampere?

Ampere is the codename for NVIDIA’s new GPU microarchitecture, which will the successor to the Turing architecture, which the current RTX GPU’s are based on.

  • RTX 2060
  • RTX 2060 Super
  • RTX 2070
  • RTX 2070 Super
  • RTX 2080 and 2080Ti
  • RTX 2080 Super

etc are the current line up of graphics cards which are based on the Turing architecture. Turing is produced in 12nm FinFET, Ampere is said to be manufactured at Samsung on 7nm. Shrinking the transistor size to 7nm allows for more transistors to be placed on a chip, which will in turn make it more powerful.

The new Ampere microarchitecture is rumored to be released in 2020 and will follow the new line up of the RTX 3000 series GPU’s, are expected to be Faster, more powerful and much more budget-friendly than their 2000 series counterparts.

What can we expect?

Well, to be honest, nothing has really been confirmed. We know that the Ampere architecture is going to be released by NVIDIA pretty soon (GTC 2020 reveal and Computex 2020 release). We know that NVIDIA is aiming to unveil high-end Ampere GPUs at Computex 2020.

It’s said that the new GPU’s will dwarf the current competition by a huge margin, but its always better to take things with a grain of salt. If the 3060, 3070 and 3080 GPU’s are going to have a huge boost in performance, we can expect a huge wave of AAA titles having RTX capabilities just around the corner. This is a happy occasion for gamers. It’s also reassuring to know that, there are rumors claiming that the new RTX series are going to be Cheaper in comparison too.RTX 3080 Ti could launch at US$1,099, US$100 shy of the RTX 2080 Ti FE. Hopefully, we expect that the RTX 3080 will cost US$699, matching the RTX 2080 SUPER while undercutting the RTX 2080 by US$100. I for one am taking a huge grain of salt with this one.
