What Is Silo Structure: How Silo Structure Help In SEO

Do you know what is Silo Structure and how implementing Silo structure can improve the SEO of your website? In this article, I am going to give an in-depth guide on this topic.

This article will help you to improve the SEO of your website and make that to rank in Google implementing the Silo structure.

If you are in the web designing field, the term Silo structure probably listened by you several times. Also, you went through that somebody said he applied Silo structure on his website and his Search engine ranking improved within a month.

There are many articles on Silo structure on the internet that claim to be ranked after siloing their web content.

SEO specialists like Niel Patel, Brien Dean told us many times on their blog and other channels that Silo structure play an important role in SEO.

In my personal experience, Siloing really improved some of my websites SEO to some extent. If you go with percentage of the percentage of impact on SEO then here is the data.

What is Silo Structure

We can compare Silo structure with a chain. Structuring web pages of a website within sub-pages and interlinking those pages to your main webpages is called Silo Structure.

Now take an example,

I have a website – I want to Siloing this website. Now what I do is to just create some subpages in which you can also call as categories. In WordPress, we have an option to create categories.

But I am not going to create categories here. rather, I will create individual pages naming them as the categories. Now I have individual category pages. Now I will assign my blog posts and other pages under these parent category pages. That’s it.

Now the last process is to connect those posts and pages to my homepage by interlinking. Now when Google crawl my website, it understands the contents easily on my website and also understands that the site is structured well.

The interlinking will pass the link juice to the homepage and my website’s SEO will be improved within a month.

How Silo Structure Help in SEO

Although I have threw some light on how Silo structure helps us to improve SEO here I will go into some in-depth knowledge of Silo SEO technique.

  • Silo Structure passes link juice to all the connected pages. Suppose If any of your blog posts ranked well in Google then Google also rank other pages interlinked with this webpage. Do you know why? Because Google knows that the page which ranked in their search engine has some useful content and users like it, So the other pages linked to that webpage would be also helpful to users. Hence Google ranks those linked pages.
  • Silo structure helps your users to consume your content very well because you serve your blog post or webpage under a certain category page. This approach initially helps the user that this page is related to their query. When they see the URL of your webpage in search engine, they can easily determine that the page is useful or not. And the magic happens. You get engaged consumers who take a lot of time to read your posts and ultimately improve your search engine ranking.
  • Interlinking your pages can also help your users to navigate to the right pages containing right information. Google know this approach and ranks your pages well.

Silo Structure In Detail

Let me show it in a diagram.

You can clearly see that the pages are under subcategories and the subcategories are under the parent domain. This is called Silo Structure.

Here, I have divided my topics into parent categories like SEO, Webhosting, and Guide. Then I have created pages dedicated to these topics. Also, I have written well-organized articles on the topics and put them on the respected topic pages.

Now come to the secondary pages which I have created under these topics. It’s so simple to place secondary pages under parent pages in WordPress. WordPress has a feature (page attribute feature) in page editor menu to put any page under any parent page.

page attribute

When you assign a parent page via this feature and update the page, you would see the URL includes the parent page name.

You just have to use this feature to create a Silo structure in WordPress.

Unfortunately, for posts, WordPress does not have this feature in the editor menu. Instead, you can use “Categories feature” to put your posts into their respected category. But this feature does not include the parent category into the URL of your page.

It does not mean that the approach is wrong. Because blog posts are used hugely for interlinking with other blog posts and web-pages which is also comes in Silo structure. Let me show you how?

There are two types of Silo structures Physical Silo and Virtual Silo.

Physical Silo

The above example you’ve seen is the physical Silo. Here you have seen the URL,

To create this structure first I have created SEO, Webhosting and Guide pages and then created child pages under these parent pages using the page attribute feature in WordPress page editor.

Here the parent pages work as a folder where I have put child pages just like files. So this is a physical structure and therefore called Physical Silo.

Virtual Silo

Virtual Silo is a link structure created through the interlinking of related pages and blog posts in a domain. Because it’s not physically existing property like a parent page folder containing child pages so named as Virtual Silo Structure.

This process is widely used in blogs. and very useful in SEO.

Blogs are none other than a knowledge base of a particular topic which we like to share with people. Because most blogs are focused around a particular topic we can use the keywords and phrases in a blog post to interlink with the related post in our blog.

This type of interlinking not only increase SEO but also improve user experience and decrease the bounce rate.

See the image below which will clearly describe you the Virtual Silo as well as Physical Silo of a blog or website.

virtual silo

This image is a perfect example of the mixture of Virtual and Physical Silo structure. In simple words, linking all the web pages through interlinking and parent-child pages is called a perfect Silo structure of a website.

Content Silo Structure For Blogs

As I have thrown some light in Content Silo under the Virtual Silo section, here I will give you the brief on this.

If you are a regular reader of some big blogs you will have noticed that they all use Virtual Silo in their blogs. They interlink their blog post contents to each other by hyperlinking related keywords in the content and build their blog as an authority blog.

This linking structure help in long-term SEO. We always should use content silo to receive SEO juice and help users to navigate throughout the website.

The Benefits of using a Content Silo Structure

Content Silo gives us several benefits.  Let me show you some benefits here.

Content Silo direct impact on the SEO of your website. If we interconnect our web pages and blog posts via related keywords then Google will use this approach as a positive signal and ranks better for those keywords.

It will also rank those pages who couldn’t rank because of the lack of on-page SEO. You just have to hyperlink these with the pages who perform well in Google search.

Then the SEO juice passed through high ranked pages to the low ranked pages. As a result, these pages will also start performing well in Google.

You just keep in mind that only interlink those pages via relevant anchor texts.

Now you wonder how this works?

Here is the answer. A highly ranked page has gained an authority over time. When you interlink a low ranked page with a high ranked page, “Google receives a signal that this low ranked page has also an authority related to anchor keyword that why I should rank this page for testing purpose.”

Now when the 2nd page ranked in Google and receives a good amount of user engagement, Google again receives the signal of authority and seal that page as an authority page and the page stays on the top for a long time.

User experience

The second and most important factor in this time is user experience. As I told above Google is now totally focus on user experience. The fact is if your web page has a high bounce rate, it will down-rank in SERP.

  • Bounce rate – When a user visits your pages via Google search as well as Chrome browser and press the back button within 10 seconds, this session counts in bounced session. If the bounce rate is above 70% then your web page will down-rank in SERP. On the other hand, if the user stays more then 10 seconds on your page and engages with your web page, it will count as a non-bounced session and Google Up-rank this page in SERP.

The content Silo structure is very useful to engage users on your page and dramatically reduce the session bounce rates.

I strongly recommend using content Silo on all your websites. You will definitely reduce bounce rate using this method.

Organised content

Content Silo is an organized form of your website content. When we use the content silo structure on your websites, we usually organize our web contents in a form of files and folders(web pages) in an Almirah(Website).

Any work when done systematically it will give you benefits for a long time. So, organizing your web contents is a wise decision for the future.

Suppose if you have started a niche website with partially matched domain and got success. After some time you want this site to scale in a wide niche. You want to change your domain name from a partially matched domain to an authorized domain.

Then an organized website structure will help you a lot. If your contents are not organized, you would lose the backlinks SEO. The perfect example of a domain change is which in the past was called as

Step-By-Step Guide to Create Silo Structure on Your Website

Here is the step-by-step guide which you can follow to build a perfect Silo structure on your website.

Keyword Research

The 1st step to Siloing your web pages is keyword research. You should always target low competition keywords related to your web pages and blog posts. Although, you can target mid-competition keywords also if your website is an authorized website.

But I would suggest you not to go with high competition keywords as big whales already acquired the 1st page and its impossible to snatch those positions from them.

Organize Silo Structure

Now, take a pen and paper and draw your Parent and child Silo pages under the domain. Think again and again and plan wisely choosing the name of the parent/child Silo pages.

Create parent pages on your website, add related contents on those pages. Create child pages under those parent pages same as you drew the structure on your paper. Add contents on those pages.

Put The Related Keywords in the Content of your pages and blog posts

Well, assuming as you have a bunch of good keywords which you want to target for SEO. Now read your page contents and feed those keywords into those pages which are on the same topic.

  • Don’t compromise the reading quality by stuffing keywords. Instead, use keywords as a natural way. Also, make sure that focus keywords are not used more than 2% in the whole article. Use LSI keywords instead. If focus keyword crossed 2% then it will be counted as negative SEO.

Internal link Silo Structure

Now it’s time to interlink all the pages with each other.

Scan all the pages for the related keywords as well as the new keywords you added on your web pages and blog posts. Hyperlink the keywords with the relevant pages. That’s it.

Now, you are the owner of a well organized Silo website.

WordPress Plugin For Silo Structure

WordPress is an award-winning CMS and if you are landed on my website then most probably you are using it on your websites and blogs.

It is a well organized CMS and gives you the freedom to create pages and blog posts on your needs. For applying Silo in web pages you can use the page attribute option located on the right side of the page editor.

But, for blog posts, there are no options like this. So what can you do if you want to apply Silo structure in your blog posts?

Well, thanks to the huge WordPress plugin directory, you can find many Silo plugins and use them to implement Silo not only on your web pages but on your posts.

Just Google for Silo structure WordPress plugins. Personally, I don’t think you need any plugin for Siloing as internal linking is also counted as Silo structure and blog posts have this feature as well as tagging and category management feature. So you can build a strong structure for your blog posts too.

Be Cautious when using Silos

When you are using Silo Structure, you have to be cautious about some things. In this section, I will discuss those important things which you should know before Implementing Silo structure on your website.

Siloing break previous URL structure

Siloing an existing website can break your previous URL structure which is not familiar for positive SEO. So you have to be aware and implement some other things too to get the best SEO fruits from Siloing your website.

Update Google Webmaster Sitemap

You must re-submit the sitemap in Google search console. If you won’t do that, your pages will not appear on the search for a long time. So just after Siloing your website, update the sitemap in search console.

301 Redirects

Apply 301 redirects on all your web page URLs to save the backlink profile. Because when you create Silo structure on your website, the previous backlinks which are routed to the old URL structure will break.

Google notice this change and when re-crawl, drop your ranking based on backlinks. So you have to create 301 redirects to your old URLs to save your backlinks.

In WordPress, there are so many plugins which can automatically create 301 redirects with just one click. Search for “301 redirects WordPress plugin” and you will get tons of results.

Beware of the above things and you will make your site more user-friendly as well as SEO friendly with Silo Structure.

Throughout the post, I have counted all the benefits and some cautions about Silo Structure. I think this article would have helped you to understand Silo. Now the decision is yours. But keep in mind in this Google penguin era a user-friendly and perfectly optimized website archives success.

Don’t do any bad SEO to gain traffic, as it will harm your site in long term.
