A-ward Ceremony

It was the 10th of January, 2018. The day, we would have to arrive at the Hospital for your mummy to be warded. We would be leaving home as a couple and returning as a family of three, just a few days later.

I chose the word ceremony after some thought. The word itself hints at celebration which is fitting since we would be celebrating your arrival into this world. It also suggests prior preparations… For that morning, before we left, your mummy was busy packing and making her final preparations. One also gets a feeling of anticipation from the word… Anticipation was definitely present and hung heavily in the air that day.

We were up before the Cockerels, since we were hoping to reach the hospital early and be comfortably settled in before noon. This however, was not to be the case. We had arrived early… Far too early. First we had to get the paperwork sorted. That hardly took any time at all. The administrative staff were well practiced at checking people in. Getting a room, on the other hand, did not go as well. As I mentioned, we had arrived way too early. Firstly, the maternity rooms that we wanted were full up. Secondly, we were there way before checkout time. That being the situation, your mummy and myself had no choice but to sit and wait till one became available. Still, we were excited… As the day drew on, we would see family after family, with their new bundles of joy… Gathered in the lobby, awaiting their discharge. It’s hard not to get excited albeit a bit anxious at seeing others with their new borns.

It was just after Lunch that we finally were escorted to our room. It was a pleasant one bedder located on the third floor of the hospital. Though it was after lunch, we were still able to get the kitchen to serve up a meal. Your mummy was hungry by the time the food arrived and eagerly wolfed her lunch. Your daddy, on the other hand, having eaten a bacon and cheese sandwich just earlier… One he had made that morning, took his time with his lunch. I must say, the meals at the hospital were excellent.

Having unpacked our belongings. We had little else to do but sit and watch TV. Your mummy was hooked up to monitors and did not get out of bed, except to make trips to the toilet. Your daddy on the other hand, had the opportunity to explore the hospital. I would make trips to the nursery, to watch how the nurses attended to the little darlings… Or I would take a walk outside the hospital to get some fresh air or to smoke.

It was a rather comfortable room and we both managed to get enough rest that night. The next day was going to be very eventful and we were very appreciative of the rest we managed to get that night.
