Comparison of Apple iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy S9

Apple and Samsung are the two renowned brands that have been dominating the smartphone industry for years. The recent battle between Apple Iphone X and Samsung Galaxy S9 is definitely the best one to date.

Samsung launched two models Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus earlier this year, while Apple launched iPhone X in November 2017. Both iPhone X and Galaxy S9 are fantastic models and you won’t be disappointed with either of them. The question is how does Galaxy S9 shape up against iPhone X?

There are lots of parallels between the 5-month old iPhone and New Galaxy S9 series. In this article, I will compare the two devices for design, built, specifications and price.

Design

Galaxy S9 sits on the top of Samsung’s slate phones. No doubt, it has an attractive design and represents the most radical change to Apple’s phone design. The display of Galaxy S9 is bezel-less, which is same as iPhone X. With curved displays iPhone X also represents a radical change to the phones designed by Apple.

The glass of the iPhone X makes the phone feels great in the hand. On the contrary, Galaxy S9 is made from premium materials befitting its price.

The iPhone X is available in Space Grey and Silver, while Galaxy S9 comes in Midnight Black, Lilac Purple, Orchid Grey and Coral Blue.

Sound Quality

The iPhone X has stereo speakers on the bottom of the phone as well as on the earpiece. Samsung has done something interesting with the speakers. The Galaxy S9 also has stereo speakers that have Dolby Atmos codec that translates into richer and louder sound. The users can adjust the audio profile from the settings. Both the smartphones have stereo speaker configuration.

Battery

Both iPhone and Galaxy S9 have wireless charging facility, which is a kind of fast charging. The Galaxy S9 has a larger battery than iPhone.  The iPhone battery has 2,716mAh rechargeable battery, while Galaxy S9 has 3,000mAh battery. From this, we can say that Galaxy S9 is likely to have more battery backup than iPhone X.

Fingerprint Scanner

Neither of these phones has an on-screen fingerprint scanner. However, Galaxy S9 kept the fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone for making mobile payments and unlocking the phone. It is given in a better position in Galaxy S9 compared to its predecessor. The iPhone X uses the passcode or FaceID feature to unlock or verify payment.

Water and dust resistance

Both iPhone X and Galaxy S9 have impressive water and dust resistance properties. However, Galaxy S9 stands ahead of iPhone X. The Galaxy S9 is rated IP68, which means dust and water resistance against beyond 1m immersion. The iPhone X is rated IP67, which means dust tight and water resistance against immersion up to 1 m.

Camera

The iPhone X features a rear-facing camera with a twin lens, which means it can take pictures in Portrait mode and Portrait Lighting. These features are offered on the front as well as the rear-facing camera. The Live Photos feature in iPhone X is a bit gimmicky than the Portrait Mode. On the contrary, Samsung Galaxy S9 has a single lens on the rear.

If you are looking for twin lens – you should buy Galaxy S9 Plus model. The best thing about Galaxy S9 camera is the Dual Aperture Mode that automatically adjusts between f/1.5 and f/2.4 based on the lighting conditions. The slow-motion video feature in Galaxy S9 can be used for short periods.

Performance

The performance of both these phones is commendable. The Galaxy S9 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 or Samsung Exynos 9810. The iPhone has Apple’s A11 Bionic Chip.  It is still unclear if Galaxy S9 will be optimized at the same speed as iPhone X. You will have to wait for the benchmarking test from different sources.

Some common Key Features of both phones

As we all know, iPhone X and Galaxy S9 series are loaded with bulk features. Here are the highlights of its main features.

Animoji/AR emoji

Apple spent some time on a new feature called Animoji that uses the sophisticated front-facing sensor to capture your facial movements and make an animated emoji. It can either be an animal, alien, smiling turd or even an alien. Though these seem to be silly, it is fun using them.

Samsung decided to do something similar and added a feature called AR emoji in Galaxy S9. The main difference between Animoji and AR emoji is that the AR Emoji is specifically intended to be your face. You can generate an emoji from your own photo and add some animations to it.

Face unlock

Both these phones support facial recognition to unlock the phone. However, the technology used is quite different in both the phones. The ‘True Depth’ camera on the front of iPhone X maps your face using 3D infrared dots. Apple believes that Face ID is much safer than Touch ID. On the contrary, Galaxy S9 uses intelligent scan technology to scan iris to unlock the phone. This feature to unlock the phone is not as secured as iPhone X.

Pricing

When it comes to pricing, the iPhone X is available at a price of 83,500 INR for 64 GB model and 98,500 INR for 256 GB model. On the contrary, Samsung Galaxy S9 is available at much cheaper rates compared to iPhone X. The Galaxy S9 is available for 64,900 INR for 64 GB.

Verdict

Both these stunningly beautiful and feature-rich smartphones offer exceptional performance.  The displays are no doubt the best in the market. However, Galaxy S9 wins for color saturation and vibrancy.

The Galaxy S9 is certainly a minor update, while iPhone X is a big step for Apple. Galaxy S9 wins over price, while iPhone X has a much better camera. The Galaxy S9 has a faster new processor with a completely redesigned camera and host of new features. The iPhone X has an edge in some key areas.

Based on the above comparison, we can’t confirm which is better over which till we get some serious reviews.  We have to wait for user reviews, as it is too early to comment on the features of Galaxy S9.
