Paradise of boathouse- My travel to Alleppey, Kerala

I always heard word "Kerala" as India's one of the most beautiful and favoured tourist destination. The number of foreign tourists visited Kerala in 2016 was 10,38,419 and the number of domestic tourists travelled to Kerala was 1,31,72,535 according to an annual tourist statistics provided by the tourism department of Kerala. This serene and beautiful state of India is located in the south and at the cost of Arabian sea. Alleppey is one of the towns of this state grown as out of ordinary tourist destination of not only India but also worlds. This small town also called Alappuzha is famous for its wooden houseboat cruise along with rustic backwaters, tranquil canal and lush green lagoons. Some days of the year one can spot beautiful pink lotus floating just not even a few inches away from you once you are on Shikaraa.

Born with an inevitable lust for beaches I got pulled to this mesmerizing Beach destination in the month of December just 2 days before the new year.

I want to go there now, how can I, please?

If you are not able to hold your thirst you must book a flight to Cochin airport which is the closest airport to Alleppey just stretched 82 Km far from each other. From there hire a taxi to Alleppey or one can take government bus from Cochin to Alleppey as a cheap transport option.

One more option available for economic travel is by train which I opted for. The railway station of Alleppey was just at walking distance where we stayed at Alleppey Beach. Direct train from most of the south Indian cities namely Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Cochin etc is available to reach here.

Where we stayed-

Sometimes I like to go with a friend to enjoy and do some mischief. So this time I went with one of my friends and decided to stay at the beach resort at a white-sand beach resort.

I just could feel the right comforting warmth of golden shining sand on the beach outside of my room. Infinite sky stretching over the ocean was in front of my eyes from the window of my room. As soon as I checked in I scurried to the beach and stretched my arms like a starfish and my grin grew slowly to smile. It was awesome stay on an average costing of around 1000 bucks per night for 2 adults. There are other beaches too in Alleppey to stay but Alleppey beach may be favoured choice for the one who wants to have so many options for food and wish to stay close to the market to be in touch to local folks. It is the only beach of Alleppey from where everything including the bus station, Train, Backwaters local market and many more restaurant were closer that can be approached just by hiring an auto or taxi or by foot if one likes to walk.

The food we tasted-

There are numerous restaurants and cafe surrounding the Alleppey beach. Every kind of food including continental, seafood, pure veg was available nearby. A restaurant on the beach called Dreamers is available where one can get Indian and continental dining. Exactly it is situated on beach road closer to W&C hospital.

For North Indian-and spicy food lover- One more restaurant called Mushroom may be the best choice. This is the restaurant where we ate most of the time owing to its mouth-watering delicious dishes. You can get here by walk or by hiring an auto from the beach.

Location- Mushroom Restaurant, CCSB road near the south police station.

Activities we did-

Though there are lots of things to visit the first day I decided to sit on the beach without exploring anything else. So with browning legs curled under I sit close to the lapping waves just some meters from my room. Waves in the evening brought the air of blended warmth and cold like a tea that has been forgotten and returned. In the evening it was high tide as usual, and the sand runes like cold lava over the beach forced by high flying waves. Darkness started falling and water became darker and the sand looked more orange. Soft glowing light appear from the sky when the sun was below the horizon. In such twilight, the beach was tinted sepia. At my backside, many lovebirds were roaming holding their hand together like swearing in front of the giant sea to be with each other forever.

Marari Beach- "Marari" one more beach of Alleppey situated at around 16 Km from the place we stayed. The local bus is economic to get there and convenient too. It was clean beach compared to Alleppey beach thanks to its distance from the public. Some home-stays are available to stay on this beach too. If one like to stay at the calm and serene beach far from public and crowed then this beach can be an unavoidable choice. Watersport lover like me can miss this opportunity to ski on the waves in Alleppey but Marari is good option to take a sunbath and to play with waves as this beach is suitable to take bath. After bath, fresh water bathrooms are not provided by government but some unorganized local people residing on beach let you use the facility in the exchange of some bucks.

Backwaters, the lifeline of Alleppey- Only because of backwater Alleppey stands out of the ordinary beach destination of Kerala state. It fosters so many houseboats that are way costly creating good income source for local to earn a handsome income. One can stay in a houseboat for some hours to a few nights according to choice. Each day-to-day facility is available on the boat from the kitchen to bathroom. One can hire single room private boathouse. There will be the person to serve each need of yours, like washing cooking and guiding. Boathouse charges varies according to time you spend on boat and distance you want to travel. Some of them charge more if you wish to explore interior forest on water.

There are many alternatives available to the houseboat that looks like "Shikaraa" (A type of decorated and shade boat in Kashmir). This is a very good choice for the person who gets bored easily because on the houseboat you have to be on water whole time and cannot access bank until you return back to the city. So this small boat can give you similar experience but for lesser time and minimum cost. They charge you around 1500 to 3500 for one private boat depending upon the number of the person for 3 to 4 hours.

Backwaters is a chain of lagoons and lakes lying on the bank of Arabian sea. This chain includes five lakes linked by canal both men made and natural.

Houseboat can be booked by clicking on following link-

In the end, I would like to suggest this destination to everyone who loves being surrounded by water and have a great desire to spend time at calm destination on beaches.
