IPL 2019 Playoff scenario How each team is placed in quest to qualify for playoffs

IPL round robin fixtures draw to a close on May 5 and until then, things could go either way. Playoffs begin on May 7 with Qualifier 1; Eliminator on May 8 and Qualifier 2 on May 10. The final will be played on May 12.

With just a few games to go for the Indian Premier League fixtures before the Playoffs, the race for the top-four has become hotter. Like previous seasons, things have become dramatic for teams concerned with some picking pace and some dropping their level. The league fixtures draw to a close on May 5th and until then, things could go either way. The playoffs begin on May 7 with Qualifier 1 in Chennai; Eliminator on May 8 in Vizag and Qualifier 2 on May 10 also in Vizag. The final will be played on May 12 in Hyderabad. Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals have already booked their place in the playoffs. Royal Challengers Bangalore were the first team to be sent out of contention.

A quick look at the IPL points table after May 1 fixture between Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals:

IPL 2019 Points Table:

Position Team Played Won Lost NR Net Run Rate Points
1 Chennai Super Kings (CSK) (Q) 13 9 4 0 +0.209 18
2 Delhi Capitals (DC) (Q) 13 8 5 0 -0.096 16
3 Mumbai Indians (MI) 12 7 5 0 +0.347 14
4 Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) 12 6 6 0 +0.709 12
5 Rajasthan Royals (RR) 13 5 7 1 -0.321 11
6 Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) 12 5 7 0 +0.100 10
7 Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) 12 5 7 0 -0.296 10
8 Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) 13 4 8 1 -0.694 9

Chennai Super Kings (13 Matches, 18 points)

Chennai Super Kings became the first team to qualify for the IPL playoffs after Rajasthan Royals beat Sunrisers Hyderabad. CSK earlier had the opportunity to book their place in the playoffs against Mumbai Indians but were beaten at Chepauk for the first time in the season. Historically, CSK have never failed to qualify for the playoffs and that trend has continued. The question, however, will be where they will finish. In their nine IPL appearances, CSK have finished in the top-four each time with a top-two finish in five instances. This means they go on to play Qualifier 1 and have two shots at making the final. A win against Delhi Capitals meant CSK are unlikely to be beaten for the top spot – even if they lose the last game. The difference between CSK and DC in the net run rate column puts Chennai ahead.

Delhi Capitals (13 Matches, 16 points)

Remaining matches: vs Rajasthan Royals (May 4; Delhi).
