Police clean up Akwa Ibom, recover 47 illegal arms, arrest 17 criminals

- The police in Akwa Ibom has recovered not less than 47 illegal arms and arrested about 17 criminals

- DSP Odiko Macdon, the police public relations officer in the state revealed to newsmen that the arms were seized from bandits, vigilance groups and other criminals in the state

- Macdon urged residents in the state to stay clear from crimes so as to make Akwa Ibom a haven of peace

The Nigeria Police Force, Akwa Ibom Command, revealed on Saturday, 21, that it recovered 47 illegal arms and 172 live ammunition and cartridges in different areas across the state from bandits, vigilance group and some unnamed persons.

DSP Odiko Macdon, the police public relations officer in the state, made this revelation in his speech to newsmen at the force's headquarters in Ikot Akpan-Abia, Uyo, the Guardian reports.

He remarked that the development was in keeping with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, on recovery of illegal firearms, ammunition and weapons throughout Nigeria.

Macdon reported that recovered ammunition include three AK 47, one G3 rifle, three pump action gun, three single barrelled gun and 37 locally made pistols.

He said: “Today again, the Commissioner of Police has been able to showcase arms that have been recovered. Most of these arms were returned while some were seized during the mop up operations.

“A total of three AK 47, one G3 rifle, three Pump action gun, three Single barrel gun and then 37 locally made pistols and over 172 live ammunition and cartridges were recovered.”

The DSP also said that only in April 2018, the command the force in the state has succeeded in arresting not less 17 suspects allegedly involved in criminal activities.

Macdon disclosed that some of the suspects were nabbed for murder, armed robbery, cultism and unlawful possession of firearms.

He said: “It is unfortunate and dastardly act when you see a family of three and two connived together and kill their brother and cut his head as you can see there.

“All the persons so paraded, ranging from cultism, unlawful possession of fire arms, murder and burglary will be charged to court.”

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com reported that the Lagos state police command on Tuesday, April 3, said it had recovered more than 200 illegally acquired firearms from individuals and suspected hoodlums in the last seven months.

The state commissioner of police, Edgal Imohimi, made the disclosure at a news conference in Lagos.
