Updates from the California fire department on Wednesday night said 12000 homes were under threat, 150 home have been destroyed by the fire and the fire was only 5% contained.
Authorities have issued warnings and mandatory evacuations have been ordered in several areas.
The head of California’s fire service, Ken Pimlott told reporters that high winds in the area makes it very difficult to contain or control the fires.
Many schools surrounding the affected area have been closed; the University of California, Los Angeles, which lies outside the evacuation zone, has also cancelled classes, citing many “uncertainties”.
Firefighters were seen in the Bel Air neighbourhood on Wednesday removing artworks from affluent homes as the fire scare grew.
The Bel Air community is home to many famous personalities, including Beyonce, Rupert Murdoch and Elon Musk.
Over 200,000 people have been evacuated across the state.
