Commercial Drone Expo Draws in 3,000, Latest in Drone Technology

The Commercial UAV Expo occurred from Monday, October 1 until Wednesday, October 3, 2018. The expo took place at Westgate Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Commercial UAV—which means Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, often times referred to as a “drone”—Expo featured commercial drones in a few different industries including surveying and mapping, civil infrastructure, process, power and utilities, mining, construction, law enforcement, emergency response and search and rescue (SAR), and precision agriculture.

Over 3,000 attended the Commercial UAV Expo. According to their website, it was the fourth annual expo, and a total of 168 exhibits were held from across 22 different countries. The expo held a total of 230 booths.

Experts on the latest in drone Technology spoke at the expo. One such speaker was Earl Lawrence, the Federal Aviation Administration’s executive director of unmanned aircraft systems integration office.

Some of the drones featured some of the latest technology around such as LIDAR—which is used to create accurate 3-D images of the geography of the land. Michael Kratsios, who works in the White House as the deputy of U.S. Chief technology officer expressed the importance of this new technology.

Kratsios indicated that the United States wants to move ahead with emerging technology and help in the development of drones. He also said that while they make developments he hopes to keep the technology up to date in the industry.

The general idea is that this technology is moving at a faster pace than our regulators are able to keep up with,” Kratsios said. “We’re seeing companies actually make a business decision to not do business in the United States, and this is something that resonated with a lot of people in the White House.”

Kratsios also talked about the difference between drones—who have no pilots in the aircraft and typical planes and helicopters. When comparing the two, he said, “The future of aviation is unmanned.”

Next year, the expo will take place again. It is set to run from October 28-30, 2019.
