Most of the Software that powers the world’s largest companies, protect our personal data or encrypts national security information is open to the public. Anyone is able to download the source code behind facebook’s user interface, Goldman Sachs’s data modeling program or even Google‘s Android OS and use its a building block for an extremely new project. What else, many of this software is actually developed jointly, maintained and designed by an army of thousands, from unpaid volunteers to employees at competing tech companies. This world is related to open-source software where code is written and shared freely. So how did a business take over the world that essentially revolves around giving away information and products?
