I have compiled a set of steps that you must follow to get your keyword research right on the spot. So, without much ado let’s start learning about the different steps involved in keyword research. You may want to tweak the ideas a little to suit your needs, the crux will, however, remain the same.
Create a list of keywords
It is obvious that the first milestone which you need to achieve is developing a list of keywords. I have interacted with few of my colleagues who say they understand that a keyword list is required but do not know where to begin. On excavating their thoughts, I found that many people encounter this problem because no one made them aware of the difference between keyword research for a post and keyword research for a website. Thus, I decided to tweak my article accordingly.
The process of creating a keyword list remains the same as for both the cases. The only difference is that the former requires grouping and is for future use, whereas the latter does not need grouping and is for instant use.
Keywords cannot be a random list. They must be related to your blog or website. Thus, you must not expect keywords falling in your palms from the sky. If you are researching for a blog post then you must first prepare a list or random keywords which you think people might be searching for. Similarly, if you are researching for a website then you must first create a list of articles that you think you will be publishing in a particular span of time. Once you have the list you need to create a list of random keywords for each of these articles like you did for an individual post.
Organizing the list of keywords against each of these articles is called grouping. It is that simple and uncomplicated.
Evaluate the keywords
Once you are done with your list, you are ready to hop on to the next stone to cross the river. You now need to analyze the list you have compiled. Your focus needs to be on evaluating the search volumes, competition and their relevance for the search engines. If you are looking forward to paid campaigns then you must evaluate the competition level and prices as well.
All right, in order to proceed further, you will need access to a keyword research tool. There are quite a few available like SEM rush, Word Tracker, and SEOToolSet. As a beginner, however, I will recommend using Google Keyword Planner Tool. Further in this post as well I am going to explain the process with the help of examples using Google Keyword research tool.
Assume that you want to write a post on “How to become a successful blogger”, and the following is the list of keywords that you have compiled.
Successful blogger, Successful blogging, How to become a blogger, How to become a successful blogger, Blogging for beginners.
You can now start evaluating these keywords using the keyword planner. When you log in to the tool you will find that there are 3 options available as displayed in the image below. You must select “Get Search Volumes and data trends”.
Once you have selected this option, enter the keywords in the box that appears. Enter one keyword in a line and then click on “Get search volumes.”
You can now analyze the results and decide that which one is the best for your post. If I were to put it in other words, I will say – choose the ones with the highest search volumes.
When you are doing this, you will also notice that the tool groups similar keywords into one and also alters some of the keywords which Google thinks is better than what you have chosen. It is certainly worthwhile considering making that replacement.
That’s it. This is all that you need to get the keyword research right. Use the ones with the highest volumes in your title and sub headings. Additionally, use the different variations throughout your blog post and you should be on the right track. Keep a good mix of ones with the high and low competition.
The short cut method
Well, if you do not have enough time to think about what your readers would be looking for you can use a shortcut method for getting keyword ideas. It is a great time-saving method to get the right keywords for your blog.
When you are using the keyword tool from Google, select the first option rather than the second option. Simply enter the topic that you want to write on. In this example, I entered “Successful blogging”.
On clicking get ideas you will get a list of keywords that are relevant to the search term you entered. You can simply pick the ones that are relevant to your topic and most popular and include them in your article.

Moz Keyword Explorer
Moz is relatively new but is no mug with the ball. The tool provides an offbeat experience for keyword research for keyword analysis. Apart from the traditional volume and difficulty results, Moz brings extra dimensions to the SEO keywords analysis. The tool tells you about the opportunity, importance an potential of a keyword.
Ubersuggest is another keyword research tool that is slowly becoming popular. While it does just the right things for you in providing search volumes, you must remember that you may not be getting as much data as you imagine. The advantage of using Ubersuggest is that it provides you keywords that are not available in the adwords keyword planner.
There are a few other tools available as well which you can use. It depends on how comfortable you are using the tools and if it helps you solve the purpose for you. Here are a few that I came across but have not really been using them as Google Keyword tool is enough for me.These are the ones:- Ahrefs, SEM Rush, Long Tail Pro, SpyFu and WordTracker. Not all of them are free to use but most come with a 14-day free trial.
