After traveling quite a bit I decided to do a top 10 list of nasty things that I found in my Hotel rooms. It turns out the top 10 list turned into a top 12.
Here is a list of things that might contains Germs or bacteria which in my experience it seems that the housekeeping crew forgot to clean or simply neglects some chores.
Obviously this varies from hotel to hotel but any chance you get try to avoid touching these things.
The Remote control
Yes, the remote control is the dirtiest thing in your room, just think about it this way someone is alone in their room what they do? They watch TV open a bag of chips and start browsing the channels on the TV. Not to say god knows what else they do when they are alone. But 2 out of 3 remotes we inspected had some kind of residue on it specially around the volume and power button. There should be a remote control inspection each week or at least put it on the to do list of the housekeeper.
That comfy thing that keeps you warm while you sleep at night, well it has a bunch of germs even some bed bugs. Some places only change them once a week or once a month. So the person before you maybe put some kind of body fluid on it and you are sleeping with tonight. While I walking trough one hotel hallway I notice the housekeeper get the comforter from the floor and putting it back on the bed. WHY? The sheets are clean why isn't the comforter? From now on every chance I get I ask for a cleaned one or I bring my own.
Do you remember those phone booths in the corner of the street? Well those had less bacteria than the phone in your hotel room. Why? because housekeepers simply do not clean them, and if they do clean it, it's with the same rag that they use to cleaned the toilet with. The phone in your room has germs because we breathe into it when we talk so its normal that it creates bacteria around the microphone area and this is why its always darker around there. Hotel chains started to replace the old phones with all black phones so we don't see the dirty phones just in case someone forgot to do their job.
The Ice Bucket
This is a great one that I found, One late night I was thirsty so I mixed myself a drink but the room didn't have a fridge so my drink was warm, I then decided to get some ice I went to go get the ice bucket I removed the top and there it was mold! MOLD! IN THE ICE BUCKET! How simple is it to just wash the ice bucket. This is something that you use to do drinks this can contain harmful bacteria and you can get sick from. Again this is poor work from the housekeeping team. Here is a tip and please use it! If you do need ice call the front desk and ask them for a clean bucket or bag for the ice bucket.
The floor might look clean but you don't know what the person before you did or where hes been with his feet. Yes vacuuming is part of daily housekeeping chores but sometimes the floor looks clean and they might be in a rush so they skip vacuuming the floor. What I learned from this is that its important to pack slippers so I can wear in the room and don't let your kids play on the nasty floor.
The Bathroom Counter
This one I didn't know about but after watching this show on TV which they visited a few rooms in different hotel chains and they tested, yeast, gram-positive cocci and gram-positive cocci, type 2 were all found on the bathroom counter. You can't see these things so I brought a black light with me on my last trip and they were right I don't know what it was but damn it wasn't clean full of spots, I got out of there right away. I mean how hard is it to clean a counter with some anti bacterial solution? I bring anti-bacterial soap everything now.
What is the number one reason you get a hotel room? Because you need a place to rest or sleep right? Well guess what that thing that you rest your head on might be full of germs, research show that housekeepers when they are rushed the first thing they forget is to change the pillowcases. So imagine how many germs, illnesses and juicy drools are waiting for you tonight on that pillowcase. I always bring my own pillow everywhere I go, not putting my face on that! Forget it!
The Coffee Machine
How many of us actually use the coffee machine? Well good news if you don't. I do not either for the simple reason that it is NASTY! Coffee machines only get used so often so the water inside the machine in the tubes gets all moldy with time if you don't use it regularly. Also studies show that the cleaning lady doesn't take the proper time to clean and rinse the coffee machine like its suppose to. So she uses the tools that she has to clean the machine the dirty rag from the cleaning the washroom and some Lysol. The question is how do you like your coffee in the morning? Moldy with extra Lysol? The best thing is to order room service or get your ass up and go find a coffee shop.
The Light switches
Ah the good light switch this one is a good one and probably the one with the most germs close to the remote control. Imagine someone that comes in the room what is the first thing they do when they come from outside? open the light right? Even just going to the washroom whats the first thing you do? Open the light right? And at night or when you leave the room what the last thing you do? close the the light right? Well do you know where all those hands before you had been? Imagine the cleaning lady cleaning the toilet and bathtub then leaves closes the light with her gloves still on. Or simply someone that went to the washroom and forgot wash their hands. So what do you do? You open the light the germs get transferred to you. Here is a tip open the switch with your elbow or deal with it wash your hands often.
The Drinking Glasses Near The Sink
I personally never used them for the simple reason that I didn't know what they were for because I only seen them in the washroom near the sink and each time it didn't look so clean. Simply don't use these I've heard that they only rinse them instead of replacing them. Imagine all the bacteria in that, EW! Some places put plastics around it to make it seem that they clean it even then don't use them, bah you can do whatever you want. But I highly suggest you call the front desk and ask for cleaned ones or if the are in a plastic sealed usually means they have changed the glasses. If you want something from the minibar my tip here is drink straight from the bottle and forget the glass.
Did you know that the curtains are full of nasty germs? Did you know that even though you got a non-smoking room someone might have smoked there before you? Well yea all this is true, the creepy thing is that some hotel chains only change or clean their curtains once a year even at that. Imagine the amount of guest that go there coughing, smoking, heavy breathing, their body odor and some might even bring their pets. Think about all these allergens in the curtains that's why when you Wake up you have puffy eyes and stuffy nose. What I do now is I don't touch the curtains and wake up with the sun, no need for wake up calls.
The Shower Head
Some people are taller than other people so obviously the Shower head should move up and down to accommodate everyone. Well I am 6 feet tall, so one morning I jump in the shower and the shower head landed on my chin. I did the mistake to touch the shower head and move it slightly up when I opened the water it started to come out all brown like rust was coming out and I was left with some kind of green residue that looked like water calcium or something gross im not a biochemist so who knows if that was dangerous for me!! Anyways how simple is it to clean the shower head with CLR or vinegar once a month you are already cleaning the freaking bathtub or shower you might as well clean the shower head. NO? Again this is poor housekeeping. I suggest not to touch the shower head and if you do need to shower during your stay inspect the shower before you stay in the room if you aren't happy ask them to clean it or change your room.
Ive been in 11 countries and many different cities all around the world, therefore I had to stay many nights in hotels and motels saw a lot of dirty things and also saw many great places with high standards when it comes to hygiene but I must say from all this the only thing that no one misses to clean is the toilet everywhere I went the toilet was the only thing shinning in the room obviously the exterior I didn't quite inspect it thoroughly.
But I understand that housekeeping is a demanding job and that sometimes they work hard and it can be a simple mistake or some places don't have good management to do a list of things that has to done and inspected before the room is delivered. One thing is certain thanks to all of this I now know what to pack!
