Pram Vs. Stroller

If you have a Baby on board, you need to decide about how you will move about with him/her after he/she is born. At some point during pregnancy,  moms must see another mother pushing her baby in her stroller and wish that were her and her bundle of joy. The sight of that looks cute and makes parenting seem so easy. However, I am sorry to burst your bubble – as a parent; you will be faced with so many challenging decisions to make. For example, you must decide whether you should get a pram, a stroller, or both.

Let us look at these two in detail to make it easier for you to choose between them.

What Is A Pram?

Prams are classic, one-size-fits-all baby carriages that are usually used to carry newborns while lying because they cannot sit up just yet. They feature a large canopy that sometimes covers half the carriage to protect the sleeping baby from the dust and direct sunlight.

Usually, most prams are sturdy and cannot be folded for transportation or storage. It means that they occupy a lot of space.

What Is A stroller?

Strollers are collapsible baby carriers designed as chairs where the babies sit. The seats can recline and feature a restraint system consisting of belts, straps, or harness to secure the baby. Strollers are suitable for both newborns and older babies. Some stroller brands like UPPAbaby Vista have seats that recline fully, making them ideal for newborns.

Unlike prams, strollers come in various sizes and designs to fit different budgets and lifestyles. The different types of strollers are:

  • Convertible strollers.
  • Travel system strollers.
  • Tandem strollers
  • All-terrain strollers
  • Jogger strollers
  • Sit and stand strollers
  • Umbrella strollers

How To Make The Decision

Before deciding whether you will buy a pram or a stroller and choose classic aesthetics over modern practicality, there are several factors that you need to consider. For example, you need to think about your lifestyle and what long-term plans you have. Asking yourself these questions helps you narrow down your options. Here are other questions you need to ask yourself:

1. Do I need a double stroller?

Do you have another baby? Are you expecting twins? In case the answer to any of these questions is yes, that means you need to get a twin or tandem stroller. But it would help if you kept in mind that these are usually larger and do not easily fit in tight spaces. They might also be a little challenging to push.

2. What features am I looking for?

Do you have a newborn and need a pram? Or do you need a newborn-friendly stroller that your baby will grow into? If you do not mind getting a pram first and later getting a stroller when your baby starts sitting up, do so.

If you want to save money, get a stroller with an adjustable seat that newborns can use.

In case you travel a lot with your baby, get a travel system with a detachable car seat.

3. Can the direction of the seat be changed ?

If your baby is too young, you would rather face you than in the same direction as you. This way, you can easily see if he is restless and do something about it. On the other hand, if the baby is older, you can have him facing away from you and seeing the world.

4. Does the pram/stroller offer the baby a smooth ride?

Ensure whatever you pick gives your baby a very comfortable ride. It is a significant consideration, especially if your baby is very young.

If you are active, you should get an all-terrain stroller so that the baby does not feel the bumps. These strollers have thick wheels and feature better suspension.

5. How easy is it to use and push around?

Can you fold it? Does it fit into the boot of your car? Or on the bus, if you use public transport? If you are looking for something easier to push around, make sure that it is not too bulky as that would affect its maneuverability. Bulky strollers also do not fold up as neatly.

Conclusion

These two terms are used interchangeably. The main difference between a pram and a stroller is that prams are used to carry newborn babies until they start sitting up. On the other hand, strollers are used to carry older babies who can sit up by themselves. Another difference between these two is that prams are not collapsible, making it quite a challenge to transport. Strollers are much more flexible and come in a wide range of designs.

If you are expecting a baby, you should decide early enough to best suit your needs.
