The “Full Time Mummy”

If you’re a mum, you can never win. You stay at home and you’re ‘lazy’, you go to work and you ‘don’t spend enough time’ with your child/children.

The “full time mummy” stigma is getting old and the rise of motherism is too, (the fact that there’s a term for people judging ‘full time mums’ says it all).

I always pictured life as a full time mum as almost the perfect life. No real worries other than going for long nature walks and baking different kinds of cakes and breads all day.

But that couldn’t be further from the truth.

We don’t bake bread, ever, and even though we walk everyday, it’s only to the shop to buy nappies, wipes, baby food or new vests.Meadowhall again… really?

It doesn’t matter if it’s a Friday or a Saturday as all the days blur into one. There’s no such thing as ‘weekends’ really, because even if there’s work in the week, by the time Saturday comes there’s washing to do, cleaning, ironing. It’s not all ‘sit on the sofa and watch Jeremy Kyle with a cuppa’.

Being a mum is chaotic. It’s exhausting, messy and takes a toll physically and mentally sometimes.

But it’s the most Rewarding Job ever.

I complain sometimes that I’m tired and my hair looks like I’ve been dragged through a bush (even on a good day), but each day I’m learning so much about myself and get to see this beautiful little boy grow and learn.

I chase Leo all around the house, listening to him giggle and chatter. We have a lot of play time, but in between I’ve still got a lot of housework and uni work to do (and even if I clean it’s guaranteed to be messy 5 minutes later).

He teaches me things daily, like to have a little more patience and that not everything has to be tidy all the time.

I don’t see what’s so bad about being a full time mum. It’s the most exhausting yet rewarding job you can do.

Between work, university and being a mum, I’d never change any of it for the world.
