Korean Drama Recommendation – November 2017

1.  While You Were Sleeping

Summary

Nam Hong-Joo (Suzy Bae) helps her run a pork restaurant by day, and is haunted by seeing the future of others in her dreams at night. She doesn't know when her dreams will become a reality. All that she knows is that it will happen and she tries her hardest to stop her bad dreams before they come true.

Meanwhile, Jung Jae-Chan (Lee Jong-Suk) is a rookie prosecutor. He and his younger brother recently move to a new House, which happens to be nearby where Hong-Joo lives, making them neighbors. One night, Jae-Chan dreams of Hong-Joo being in an accident. The dream was so vivid that he finds himself warning Hong-Joo despite them barely knowing each other. He also starts to pay attention to the sequences of events leading up to the accident, finding it eerily similar to the one that is in his dream.

When he senses that his dream is going to be real, he takes extreme actions to stop it, thus saving Hong-Joo life as well. While shell-shocked by what would have happened her had Jae-Chan not stepped in, Hong-Joo is grateful for his help. And once they crossed paths, there is no going back.

Thoughts

I have watched dramas starring Suzy Bae before and I must say, I hated it with a passion I didn't know I have. Which is why I was hesitant to start this show.

However, I did eventually decided to give it a try, and I found out that her acting has actually improved a lot. I haven't really gotten too far into the show as the plot tend to get way too intricate at times. While this drama has garnered a lot of hype in the past few months, not all the reviews seem to be good. As far as feedback from the viewers go, it seems like this is the kind of show where if you like it, you really like it or if you hate it then you will really hate it. There doesn't seem to be a middle ground with this show.

If you are into thriller and mystery solving, definitely do give this tv show a try. Each episode is only 30 minutes long which I find very refreshing as I have story attention span and often get bored easily when a tv show is too long.

2. Because This Is My First Life

Summary

Nam Se-Hee (Lee Min-Ki) is a single man in his early 30's. He has chosen not to marry. He owns a house, but he owes a lot on his mortgage. He decides to rent out one of his room so that he can use the rental fee to help pay for his mortgage.

Yoon Ji-Ho (Jung So-Min) is a single woman in her early 30's. She does not own a house and envies those that do. She has also given up on dating due to her financial struggles. Her family is a patriarchal family, which means the male has the say in basically everything. Her little brother has recently got married, but things soon change once the whole family finds out that Ji-Ho's brother has gotten his wife pregnant.

Once Ji-Ho's father heard the news about the pregnancy, he starts becoming very passive aggressive with her, indicating that she is no longer welcomed in the house now that her brother is giving the family an heir. Unable to stand it any longer, Ji-Ho decides to move out of the house. While looking for a cheap apartment to rent, her friends recommend her Nam Se-Hee's apartment. Shocked and excited by the extremely cheap rent price, she immediately agrees to move into the house without asking much detail about her lessor.

"Because This Is My First Life" will center around a "house-poor" man and a homeless woman who end up sharing a house together. It will deal with the problems facing today's generations and how the present day youth view the realities of life concerning jobs, romantic relationships and marriage.

Thoughts

I have started a few episodes because the poster really piqued my interest and I am not disappointed. This show looks like it could be a very interesting series, although I can't really feel the chemistry between the two quite yet. I am hoping that the relationship between the two will improve as the show goes on.

As for the character itself, they are both very quirky. It never fails to amuse me seeing how they interact with each other. If you are looking for a light fluffy tv show to binge on, you should definitely give this one a try.

3. Mad Dog

Summary

Choi Kang Woo (Yoo Ji-tae), a former police leader of Taeyang Insurance's Investigator team, decides to go independent with the team members whom me can trust, after an airplane crash that took the life of his wife and son.

He then meet Kim Min Joon (Woo Do-hwan) a genius former swindler whose brother was also a victim of the crash, and thus begin their rivalry and cooperation.

Thoughts

While I am not usually into tv shows that doesn't have romance in it, for some reason, the synopsis to this show piqued my interest. Based on the summary alone, this one looks like it is going to be one kick ass tv show and I hope "Mad Dog" really live up to the expectation.

In total, "Mad Dog" will have 16 episodes and it is currently still on going. As I hate waiting every week for new episodes, I'm going to wait until the series is done before I start binge watching on this show.
