Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia for Mumbai bridge collapse victims

During the peak hours on Thursday, the Himalaya foot over-Bridge collapsed near the landmark Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CST) railway station in South Mumbai – taking away 6 lives and 33 injuries. In the wake of incident, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the keens of victims of the Mumbai Bridge Collapse.

At around 7:30 PM, when the roads, tracks and railway stations are rushed by people heading back to home, the foot over bridge near one of the busiest Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CST) railway station collapsed. As per anonymous officials, the 40-year-old bridge was crippled during heavy rainfall and minor repairs had been carried out on the CST Bridge as part of the safety audit – along with 445 such bridges. And as per eyewitnesses, the repairs were being carried out on the over bridge the same morning when the bridge collapsed.

As per the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) data, there were about 20 people on the Mumbai Bridge when the collapse incident happened, killing 6 people including two women and injuring 33 with medium to minor injuries. A team of 45 officials had rushed on site for rescue operations and the traffic was diverted to Mahanagar Palika road towards Metro junction, due to the collapse. The injured were rushed to the nearby St George Hospital immediately, and search operations for people trapped under the debris were launched.

In the aftermath of Mumbai bridge collapse, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to kin of deceased, Rs 50,000 to those injured in the accident. Speaking of the incident to press, Fadnavis said, “This Bridge was constructed in 1980. This bridge was found ‘fit’ in the structural audit. We are finding out who is responsible for this audit. We will take strict action against those responsible. Ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured. A preliminary inquiry report will come soon”.
