Introduced in May 2016, Google Assistant is the voice-enabled virtual assistant that performs actions like setting reminders, adding something to your shopping list and control your smart home, among other things, by simply invoking Assistant by voice. Now that Google’s virtual assistant is available for smartphones running on Android 7.0 Nougat and 6.0 Marshmallow, Google has decided to take a step further. Google Assistant will now be available Android tablets, after having launched on phones, smart speakers, Android Wear watches among others. Not just that, the virtual assistant will also be rolling out for phones running Android 5.0 Lollipop.

For tablets running under running Nougat and Marshmallow, the Google Assistant update will be available in the coming weeks. But the condition is that it will be available to the devices that have language set to English – and will be available in US for starters. Whereas, Assistant will be available for phones running Android Lollipop with devices having English set as default language – for US, UK, India, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Italy, Japan, Germany, Brazil, and Korea; and in Spanish language in US, Mexico and Spain. So pretty much most majority areas of the world.

With this launch, Google Assistant will now be available to around 80 percent of active Android devices in the world, helping the Mountain View giant take on Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri with billions of users now availing the feature. Because a good 26.3 per cent of all active Android phones still run on Android Lollipop, which is the second biggest after Android Marshmallow with 29 per cent. So it is only wise for Google to make their virtual assistant available for Lollipop users; as of now, almost half of the Lollipop users are set to get Google Assistant, and the rest are expected to get it soon.
