JY Pillay, An Indian-origin Man Elected As Interim Singapore President

An Indian-origin JY Pillay has been appointed as Singapore’s acting President until it gets new head of state.

JY Pillay served as a Chairman of Council of Presidential Advisers (CPA), sworn in from Tony Tan Keng Yam who completed his six-year tenure on Thursday.

The role of Pillay will be until September 23, 2017, when any other candidate is elected unopposed. However, the law of Singapore tells that whenever there is vacant seat, it is being filled the CPA Chairman, the first in line to exercise its powers.

According to the report of Singapore media, this happened first time when the office became vacant since the elected presidency was introduced in 1991.

Although, Pillay is always taking charge of acting President whenever and wherever required by Singapore Constitution, hence making Pillay as the most prominent candidate for this temporary post.

He acted as President in May, when Tan made state visits to Europe. He has served for consecutive 60 days when President SR Nathan visited Africa.

It is believed that the 3 candidates from Malay origin will be filing their candidacy to stand for election for President’s post. A minority group of Singapore may make difference to the highest office of a nation.
