Beauty Product Discovery – Look Fantastic Beauty Box October 2018 – Unboxing and Product Reviews

Once again, Look Fantastic is the first Beauty box to arrive this month and I really love their consistency. The Look Fantastic beauty advent calendar has also arrived, post coming soon.

This month’s Look Fantastic box had an “embracing positive energy and self-care” theme as we start to suffer from post-summer blues. I actually haven’t had any post-summer blues this year, I’m ready to embrace fall and fall colours but it is definitely a fitting theme.

The Look Fantastic box also always comes with a small monthly beauty magazine that has a little more information about the products contained and some other featured products, and a travel size, but full edition, of the ELLE magazine. This Beauty Box is such an amazing value for money. To subscribe to Look Fantastic and get £5 off your first box click here.

This beauty box always comes with a quote under the lid and this month it said “Mångata [mowan-gata] The reflection of moonlight on water”. Sometimes these quotes fit the theme and sometimes they seem random but they are always something educational and interesting to know. Also, good conversation starters!

This month’s box contained 6 products of which 3 were full size and the rest 3 were travel size. From left to right as seen in the picture below, the products were: a face mask, a blush, a body lotion, a lip tint, a neck cream and a night mask.

Let’s have a look at the products in more detail. These are short reviews that cover first impressions and experiences from using the products. For full reviews, including ingredient analysis and if I would recommend a product or not, check out: Bonds of Beauty (all articles here). Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and that beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, requirements and biological build which can influence things. What worked for me might not work for you and vice versa, please leave your comments below!

Talika Bubble Mask Bio Detox

Bubble masks are quite trendy right now and a lot of beauty boxes have been including them. They are essentially sheet masks that foam up and in general, are meant to clean the skin. I personally find cleaning masks a little odd not only as a concept but I also find the benefits of nourishing masks much more worth the time and money.

You are meant to apply this mask on clean dry skin, leave for 10 minutes and then rinse with water.

This mask claims to visibly purify the skin due to the bamboo charcoal, give visibly healthy skin due to the probiotic rice and visibly tone the skin due to the thousands of microbubbles. My skin definitely felt cleaner but there wasn’t a visual change. This mask also claims to leave the skin visibly unclogged, moisturised and soothed. I don’t even know what visibly unclogged looks like other than if I didn’t have any blackheads left, which I still have many, but my skin did feel moisturised and soothed. This mask also claims to offer you “bio-detox” by oxygenating and anti-polluting. To be honest, the scientist in me is hurting a little and it all feels like a really hard sell of a cleaning mask.

There are definitely some good ingredients in this mask but unfortunately many of them are after the ingredient “parfum” which means that they are contained in tiny amounts.

This is a full size mask which retails for £7.99. SCORE = 6/10

Pixi by Petra Fresh Face Blush in Colour Beach Rose

This is a warm toned blush in a typical green plastic, Pixi by Petra packaging. The packaging is simple yet nice and it works well. The blush itself lasts for a while and it has a subtle cosmetic scent.

The ingredients are very simple and there isn’t anything especially skin nourishing other than vitamin E, which nowadays all beauty product have. It’s a blush though and it works well.

The only drawback for me was the colour, Beach Rose. It’s like a brown red and I can’t quite decide whether to use it as a blush or bronzer/contour. It’s something in between and I’m not sure I like that.

This is a full size product (4.5g) and it lasts for 12M. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a reliable UK price for this and the brand doesn’t list the product on their UK website. SCORE = 7/10

Ahava Mineral Body Lotion

The main idea behind this lotion is the utilisation of Dead Sea water which is said to contain skin-nourishing minerals such as magnesium, calcium and potassium.

There are a few good ingredients in this lotion but unfortunately some of them are after the ingredient “parfum” which means that they are contained in tiny amounts. In general, it is not in the top skin nourishing lotions out there.

The lotion is a white thin cream that spreads easily and is absorbed quickly. It doesn’t leave any residues behind and it has a floral but creamy scent. It leaves the skin feeling moisturised and soft.

This product is paraben free and allergy tested. However, this doesn’t mean much as everyone reacts differently.  If you have sensitive skin try this (and any cosmetic) at the back of your hand first. This product is travel size (40mL), lasts for 6M and the full size 250mL retails for £23. SCORE = 7/10

Dr Lipp Elderberry Lip Tint

This cute little lip tint can also be considered a gloss as it adds a little colour and shininess. It comes in small, plastic but gorgeously red packaging which even has a lip applicator for easier use. This means that you can apply the product directly on your lips without having to deal with using tools or creating a sticky finger!

The tint has a subtle red-burgundy colour to it which is buildable to an extent. It can be used on its own, even on no-makeup makeup looks or over lipsticks. It feels moisturising but not sticky or heavy.

It contains only 4 ingredients, medical grade lanolin (a natural moisturiser), edible plant pigments (in this case Elderberry), distrach phosphate (a pigment disperser) and glyceryl caprylate (a natural preservative).

This product is cruelty, fragrance and additive free. It lasts for 12M and this 8mL product is full size or pocket size as Dr Lipp calls it. SCORE = 8/10

Prai Throat & Décolletage Cream

Specific body part creams are usually a marketing play that specifically targets your concerns, like for example you dark circles or your soggy neck. In general, your skin needs the same nourishing all over, with only a few exceptions like for example, areas that are used a lot like hands or feet, skin that is not the same type like for example, if your face is oily but your body is dry (yep that’s me!) etc.

With that being said, if your skincare is good you do not need a special eye cream or a special neck cream and if you have a neck cream you can use it in other areas too.

This white cream has a subtle cinnamon meets cream type of scent (smells lovely!) and it spreads easily. It gets absorbed quickly and it doesn’t leave any residues behind.

My skin didn’t feel particularly moisturised after using this but neither dry. It was almost as if I didn’t use anything which is bizarre.

There are a few good ingredients but most of them are just standard. There are no special for your neck ingredients and I’d really like to know how this product was “developed specially for the throat and décolletage” or the reasoning behind this being a “luxurious cream”. Maybe I’m just not getting it but most of the ingredients are typical and there are products that are not marketed as luxurious or specific for the neck which have much better ingredients.

I didn’t notice any difference on my neck but I will keep using it, with an open mind, until it runs out.

This is a travel size 15mL product which lasts for 12M but the full size £50mL one retails for £24.99. SCORE = 6/10

Monu Night Renewal Complex

This night mask is meant to stay on clean dry skin overnight to refresh and rejuvenate your skin while you sleep. You can use it every evening after cleansing and toning.

It contains Marine Collagen, Polysaccharides and other good ingredients which will definitely at the very least condition your skin. The formulation is relatively simple but it could be a little addition to your skincare on those days when you feel that you need a little more.

It is very easy to apply and is absorbed slowly fully overnight. The skin is left feeling moisturised and soft.

This product is paraben free and lasts for 12M. This is a travel size 30mL product but the full size £50mL one retails for £44.95. SCORE = 7/10.

Overall, this month’s box contained some interesting products but it didn’t really have a wow factor. Nevertheless, there’s always highs and lows and part of the fun of these boxes is not knowing what you are getting. I must admit though, this box was a little boring.

Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 7/10

Overall box score after product testing (average of product scores) = 6.8/10

Star product = Dr Lipp Elderberry Lip Tint
